Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Had a response to my earlier complaint today...
"Dear Greenroofer
I refer to the above complaint and your recent correspondence with this office.
Both taxi drivers have been traced and interviewed, they were advised of the nature and details of the complaint and shown the YouTube video you provided.
Both drivers accepted that their choice of overtaking location and how they carried out their manoeuvres was not acceptable.
The drivers were advised that they must take extra care around cyclist, give plenty of room and ensure that when overtaking a slower moving road user that they, read the road correctly and ensure that they can carry out the overtake in a safe and timely manner.
They were warned about future behaviour with regards to this incident and have been advised that the circumstances of this incident have been attached to their driver record and may be referred to should they come to our attention in the future.
I hope this addresses the matter and thank you for bringing the circumstances to our attention."
Seems fair enough to me.
The question I'm left with is whether this will make them more careful around cyclists or more antagonistic towards them...
Good work Greenroofer.
I think this is a standard response. This is very similar to one I received:
"Taxi Complaint
I refer to the above complaint and your recent correspondence with this office.
The taxi driver has been traced and interviewed, he was advised of the nature and details of the complaint.
The driver was shown the video clip that you supplied and accepted that he could have given you more room, he was advised that he must take extra care around cyclist and that road safety was of paramount importance at all times. He accepted the advice given by the Cab Inspector.
He was warned about future behaviour with regards to this incident and has been advised that the circumstances of this incident have been attached to his driver record and may be referred to should he come to our attention in the future.
I hope this addresses the matter and thank you for bringing the circumstances to our attention.
I have attached a link to our customer satisfaction survey and would ask that you take a few minutes to complete this.
S843 CSG (?) performed a very close MGIF before the red lights on Haddington Place going uphill. When I screamed and swerved out the way he had a go at me for "weaving all over the road", then promised to [rearrange my face]. I got a very blurry photo of the back of his vehicle as he sped off.
He has been reported.
Correction: I've tried twice to report this driver, the first time with a photo attachment which the mail system objected to. I removed the photo as it wasn't great and resent the message. Still the same response:
It is Council policy to check emails for:
- large attachments
- pictures that may be inappropriate for business use
- content that may indicate unsolicited mail
- video files
You attempted to send an email on Wed, 18 Mar 2015 09:20:50 +0000 to:
licensing@edinburgh.gov.uk
that may fall into one or more of these categories and it has been stopped.
I will keep trying...
It seems that the Licensing people have a different view on the incident I posted earlier in the thread than that of @edinburgh_taxis and have passed it on to the Cab Inspector of Police Scotland. Not sure if this is standard holding letter but it seems to vary from the usual response. I'll wait and see what develops.
"Dear Condor2378
Complaint regarding Taxi Driver
I refer to the above complaint of 16th March, concerning the conduct of a taxi driver licensed by the City of Edinburgh Council.
I will pass your complaint to the Cab Inspector at Police Scotland and ask him to investigate the circumstances. I will contact you again when enquiries are complete.
Yours sincerely
Nice Council Lady."
I eventually got through with my email. It turns out you can't actually quote any verbal abuse accurately because the council's mail system doesn't recognise the difference between sweary words and quoting sweary words so just bins your message. This reduces the impact of my complaint somewhat: "as you can see in the photo I couldn't attach the driver said something that I can't quote".
"the driver said €¥<£ %€€ (the first word starts with the 6th letter of the alphabet)"
"The driver used a variety of punctuation marks in the middle of his words."
Someone got back to me and advised me how to send the message through so it could be released by them.
"Someone got back to me and advised me how to send the message through so it could be released by them."
So you got a secret code which means it's blocked not rejected?
Aye it apparently gets into a holding pattern but if they know there's something there they can pick it up from whatever content blocker has trapped it.
Witnessed the apparent aftermath of a taxi/motorbike collision at the junction of S Charlotte St & Charlotte Sq last night about 6:30. When I arrived at the lights, a taxi was stopped broadside across the centre line, a limping motorcyclist was pushing his damaged bike out from behind the taxi. Motorcyclist must have been filtering down the outside when taximan decided to pull a u-turn.
The taxi then completed its u-turn to the opposite side of the road and the rider had to limp across the road while the taxi driver stood insouciantly waiting to victim blame exchange details
As I was driving west on the A8 near Pinkhill (at 30mph which is the speed limit there), a black 'M8' type taxi attempted to undertake me using the bus lane.
Only the bus lane was already occupied by a cyclist, quite rightly riding in primary. The taxi driver would have had plenty of time to observe the cyclist as the road was straight and visibility good.
Instead the taxi approached the cyclist at 35 - 40mph and slammed his brakes on at the last minute, drawing parallel with me and failing to complete the undertake maneuvre. He then pulled over to the 'general traffic lane', tailgating behind me, then attempted to speed past me again on the inside, once we were both past the cyclist.
I thought his driving was aggressive, bullying, intimidating and illegal, so I sounded my horn. To which he wound down his window, flailed his arms and shouted a load of inaudible abuse.
All that, and he was turning off left at Pinkhill anyway.
MGIF. MGTNOAFAP (Must get to next obstacle as fast as possible).
Annoyed I didn't get his number, as it was definitely worth a complaint to taxi licensing.
This morning on the A8 eastbound passing the airport on-slip. Merc M8 Taxi 1235 (SC64 APO, V187). Very close un-necessary undertake pass almost clipping my shoulder.
I checked over my shoulder as I was coming up to pass the on-slip and saw him way down the hill, so he must have seen me in plenty time to adjust his speed or even take to the bus lane section, but he decided to undertake pass me close, half on the bus lane and half on the merge lane.
This could have taken me down in front of 60-70 mph traffic.
I will post a video when its uploaded. Pretty sure I will be putting a complaint in about this one.
TBH this is why I use the cycle path. Slip roads give me the willies.
I use the paths when on my mountain bike, but they aren't suitable for my road bike. I always have a good look over my right shoulder when passing the off slip to make sure drivers know I'm going straight and my left shoulder passing on-slips to make sure they see me.
Saw 2 taxi drivers driving whilst using handheld mobile phones in the space of 2 days.
Unfortunately did not get their numbers.
Is it just me, or this problem getting worse?
Got a response to above:
"Taxi Complaint

Seems almost the exact same response to the outcome of my last taxi complaint (See top of page)
@richardlmpear
Same response that I've had twice. I suspect that there has never been any other reply, but would be happy to be proved otherwise.
I reported the taxi driver in this video to Anne Chandler / Licensing at the council.
I got the standard boiler-plate response:
"I refer to the above complaint and your recent correspondence with this office.

The driver was advised that he must take extra care around cyclist and that road safety was of paramount importance at all times. He accepted the advice given.

If the driver has been interviewed that he will be more careful next time.
I shall be reporting taxi no.1320 who at 1730 this evening overtook me with less than two feet of space, between the just-gone-green traffic lights at the Haymarket junction and Grosvenor St into which I was going to turn.
Taxi parked on double reds and over red cycle lane on Leith Walk, while driver popped into Gregs. Photos of taxi and driver sent to licencing folk.
Slightly bemused by today's exchange with the licencing people (by email)
Charlethepar:"Please see photos of taxi parked on double red lines and across bike lane on Leith Walk yesterday afternoon at about ten to three. Driver was in Greggs.
This is precisely the same bad, dangerous and illegal parking as was subject to my last complaint (ref)
If, as it appears, this is common practice amongst Edinburgh licensed taxi drivers, surely you should bet taking some firmer action in response.
Thank you"
Enforcement officer:"I refer to your recent complaint and the photographs that you have attached in relation to it.
I will speak to the driver on this occasion, however this is a matter for Parking Enforcement and as such I will pass this to them for their attention, when in the area."
Charlethepar: "Are you really arguing that dangerous and inconsiderate behaviour of taxi drivers is not a matter for the licencing authority?"
Enforcement officer:"I am not arguing with you and my email did not in any way infer that I was. What I am saying is that it should be dealt with by the most appropriate department, which given that the offence is a parking one, then I have passed it to the correct department to deal with the issue on a wider basis.
As I said in my email the driver has been spoken to and warned regarding his behaviour."

Crunch
Looked round to see a woman on a bike right in front of a taxi just after 5 today. She was cycling down Morningside Road and he was emerging from the road by Waitrose.
She was a bit shocked (no surprise there!)
Driver leapt out and apologised, then parked.
Bike and rider undamaged (quick assessment) - but real shock.
Driver handed over his card and said he'd been waved out...
Inconsiderate this one - there was time for the taxi driver to reverse back to let the cyclist past before the car turned up behind - the cyclist was waiting several minutes...
I've been using the bus recently because of the frost/ice; waiting at the Haymarket bus stop means I've been able to watch the rank opposite every evening.
I would say that every fourth or fifth taxi ignores the sign saying "no u-turns", and most will sit parked up with their engines running. Who is responsible for enforcement of this?
