    Wandered past the new counter by the canal this afternoon... 163 counts had been made by just after 3pm despite the weather... I wonder what would have been recorded if it were positioned better? I also had a look at the new pedestrian link round the back which seemed nice enough, but they are clearly keen to discourage skateboarders.

    Coatbridge one is in place. I didn't see it yesterday, it was there this morning. It was saying 203 at 0535 and up to 257 by 2100 when I was coming home.

    The MMW counter is back on-line and has picked up where it left off, possibly quote literally given that it'd counted over 4000 'today' which may span a bit more than 24 hours, either that or people have been messing with it yet again.

    I am told that the Canal cycle counter is counting mostly pedestrians and pushchairs, but I haven't seen it yet, so don't know how true this is...

    @Kim
    It's definitely counting pushchairs - at least it was when we were at the Canal Festival earlier this afternoon.

    Maybe more of an active travel counter then... ;-)

    I may have missed this somewhere upthread but who decided the locations for the counters? Has the canal counter ended up where it is perhaps because of some issue with the waterways people not wanting it on the towpath further along? Idle speculation...but it's a bit useless where it is.

    Interesting bicycle counter by canal #Edinburgh: but counts buggies as bikes! Who owns? @Edinburgh_CC @scotgovhealth

    The canal basin one counts pedestrians as well as I know a couple of kids that added a fair few counts at the canal festival a few weeks back. Pretty useless there.

    The MMW one also has inflated numbers. I pass by most mornings at the same time. Mostly the count is at a few hundred but sometimes over a thousand. Now I would love to think there was a mass of cyclists on these mornings but I reckon it's more likely people returning home from a night out adding a good number of extra hits for fun.

    Lochrin Basin counter not been working for the last three weeks or so.

    @Chug I wondered if that might be the case, but I rarely pass it; hoepfully they may be considering relocating it to the other side of the lifting bridge for more counts.

    MMW rolled over 300,000 a few weeks ago now. I wonder if it will make it to half a million by the end of the year.

    From john Lauder: Hi, yes, power surge wrecked CPU, which was returned to manufacturer. Expect repaired unit next week. Up & running ASAP thereafter

    Did anyone see the Hogmanay count? By my estimates it would have tallied around 475,000 since late April so 750,000 seems like a reasonable aim for 2015, with a million being an optimistic but achievable prospect!

    When I passed going into town about 11am on Hogmanay it was at 474,xxx I think. So I doubt it quite made it to 475k. Would be interesting to see some sort of breakdown of numbers from it (monthly, weekday vs weekend, hour of day etc.)

    Bike counter seems to have failed. Stuck on 107 and has now gone out.

  18. Yep, cycled past this morning and it was on 107 and didn't register me...

    It has been like that for about a week - I mentioned it on the other bike counter thread and reported it to Sustrans. It appears to still be counting at least, if not updating.

    Did anybody note the count at the end of the year? From what I remember it looked likely to reach (or it had maybe already reached) its highest annual count so far.

    I passed on the 29th, and still have the helmet camera footage. Unfortunately it was snowing, so it's hard to decipher, but I think it says 583 thousand and something.

    Doesn't the data go somewhere - we could ask what the total was at midnight on the 31st.

    Hopefully the counte is working just the display that is frozen?

    @gembo the counter is working fine as far as I'm aware. It has merely reset for the new year and currently on its way to 5000.

    Had a wee google - Here is the live counter webpage for mmw. There's one here for the Union Canal at Edinburgh Quay too, which is claiming 70k clicks this year already!

    @gkgk hmm, the MMW total seems to be less than what I thought it said as I walked by yesterday while the canal total is clearly incorrect though given that it is usually a fraction of that at MMW. Quite strange!

    @Frenchy 600,000 sounds like a new target.

    The online one says 3903. Maybe old, not updating at all.

    I wrote to the cycle counter people, who replied moments later, brilliant:

    It would appear that all of the counters went offline (temporarily) at the start of the year which has caused the count on the website to be a bit behind. The count on the counter is indeed correct and the technicians over in Denmark will resolve to rectify those displayed on their website.
