04th November 2013 the first frost day of the year*?

Saw the gritters out last night. No grit down on any paths I cycled but not really neccessary yet. First frost seen on the Hutchison path, pretty constant after that on the off road sections. Ice on the Broomhouse path where tramworks vehicles have spread mud onto it by driving across grass.

    * not counting those earlier this year from last winter. I hesitate to say it's the first frost of the winter as it isn't winter yet.

When I left this morning it was -0.5 degrees at home and about 2.8 degrees at the KB weather station. It seemed iciest near Whitecraig (on my route) but the bridge over the bypass seemed to have been gritted (often icy there). I decided to go on the road rather than risk even the top bit of the Innocent path. I wonder if it has been gritted yet.

Tomorrow may be tricky as we have rain due in at rush hour after a frosty night forecast.

I was worried about the frost while climbing back up to the path from one of the traffic lights on the BP, back wheel slipping whilst standing up on the fixed can end unhappily.

Frost on meadows near jawbone walk.

Also one icy spot on leamington walk on the ped side. The high points on that path usually need gritting before anywhere else.

2° outside my north-facing window this morning. Frost on the sub-Crags cycle path where the sun hadn't yet reached or removed it.

If stupid "you weren't in" (I was) and "we left a card, twice" [no you didn't] Citylink couriers hadn't decided to return my drum-brake hub to the supplier my winterbike plans would be further advanced.

Also found that bars with a cable-groove in them specifically for running the cable from a bar-end shifter are completely useless as the groove prevents the insertion of the bar-end shifter expansion bolt into the bars, so they can't actually be used with bar-end shifters. The moral of the story is to by non-bar-end-shifter-specific bars if you want to use a bar-end shifter.

@Amir, no lol, precaution! My commute starts before 0600 on ungritted roads with variable lighting levels, and experimentation suggests I'm allergic to hitting icy tarmac at speed ;-)

Frosty in Fife, on the Bridge and in sheltered spots on the way in from South Queensferry. This reminds me I want to ask the Bridge authority what they plan to do this winter.

@Kaputnik - when buying my Chameleon, I flatly told Spa Cycles they were /not/ to send it via CityLink - they are the most unreliable, and unhelpful bunch I've ever dealt with (and last time I looked, Livingston wasn't part of Edinburgh...)

Credit to Spa Cycles, they just said "Right ho, squire", and it came FedEx

@Kaputnik, I have things delivered to work, so no failures to deliver ever.

@DaveC we are embargoed from such practicalities. Some genius somewhere thought it would be an efficiency if our contract mail room staff (who are employed to recieve, sort, process mail) didn't have to deal with personal deliveries, rather our salaried staff have to waste their time and effort either staying at home to recieve parcels that never arrive so they waste time and effort locating "Edinburgh" depots in Livingston or Bathgate trying to get their parcels.

Well it's officially the start of winter in my own wee world. Ice tyres fitted to the surly along with winter lights and gloves in the pocket. :-)

Brrr, white roads and paths leaving the house this morning and freezing fog all the way down to the station, numb thumb and forefingers too so it must be particularly chilly!
At least there's no danger of getting too sweaty :-o

@twq Me or the guy with shorts

I passed him just north of Dobbies. The shorts were light coloured lycra (I don't normally look at people's shorts - I was just stunned).

I'm still wearing long shorts on my commute in. It's warmed up a bit by the time I swing a leg over my bike, and it's generally a bit milder nearer the coast.

I'm still wearing shorts, cos I is ard!! (under my longs... ;O)

Frosty this morning again but this time the ForthRoadBridge has de iced the path, which was much improved on yesterday when it was very slippery. Looks like that tweet to them paid off.

It's a good idea to protect knees from the cold - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knee_arthritis
It's a vulnerable joint with little protection from the elements.

I tend to think about it below 10 degrees and definitely below 6. This may be on the low side for some but the rest of my legs warm up to much above say 10 degrees.

Brrrr. Got my big coat out this morning. Need to track down the warm hat and gloves.
I'll continue to cycle in a skirt (and tights) through the winter (really cold weather brings out a pair of socks that I take off when I get to the office). That's just for a few minutes Bromptoning though. Longs for the big bike (though that may be Ron Hills over shorts if my proper longs are in the wash...)

Frozen fog out at the Gyle now, visibility between 2nd floor and the ground level is minimal.

and my phone signal has dropped out, I'm worried that the Gyle is being reabsorbed into what ever circle of hell it first emerged!

The 7th floor of the DSB is surrounded by freezing mist, creating a beautiful rosy-gold glow in the common room.

I do like autumn days like this

@amir I meant me. It wasn't me, but I was out in my shorts this morning. Managed most of last winter without long legs - think my shortish, high intensity commute & hairy legs keeps me warm enough, as long as I have enough layers on top.
