Definitely keep the marathons on at least for the first few days. The path apart from the new bit was covered with road debris and twigs when I went to have a look at progress last week. Last year after the path re-opened I had a hawthorn twig stapled to a tire by a couple of thorns, gave a lovely hiss when I pulled it off...

Be nice if the path is swept fully before opening this time.

Original timescale of (I think) 10 weeks would see the works finishing this week.

Is this route going to be available in time for PoP?...

Can't see them finishing the work by the end of the week but you'd hope they would have it done by the 25th

I've emailed Callum at the council to ask about the progress. I'll let you all know if I hear anything.

Callum came back to me first thing this morning with this reply. Fingers crossed the current stable weather remains.

Our contractors are running slightly behind schedule, and the cycleway surfacing works will now take place next week. As such, we currently anticipate that the path should have fully reopened by the end of Friday next week if there are no further delays and the weather remains suitable for surfacing works.

I am aware that the Pedal on Parliament event will be taking place on Saturday 25th April in Edinburgh, and that there may be feeder rides who may wish to use the upgraded cycleway on their way to the event. As such, we will do our utmost to have the works completed in time, however I will be in a better position to advise of a confirmed opening date in the middle of next week, and will email you then.

Should the works not be complete in time for the 25th, obviously the temporary diversion route through Dalmeny Estate will remain in place, and this is clearly signed for any users unfamiliar with the route.

I will be in touch next week,

    Regards,

    Callum

    That's good news.

Driving in at the weekend (forgive me!) I saw a cyclist on the dual carriageway (on the road) along the stretch being upgraded. Incredibly dangerous. Don't really understand how people miss the diversion / path closed signs.

@stredin: Missing road signs also common in Car drivers

who deals with the bit of path from the FRB to Ferrytoll?

Don't know if anyone else is thinking this but it's a bit 'stony' for my liking. could do with a sweep...or is it just me being a moan?

@Beano Bit from FRB to the lay-by is looked after by FRB staff. After the lay-by to the Ferrytoll is Bear Scotland.

After the lay-by to the Ferrytoll is Bear Scotland.

I thought that too, but didn't DaveC establish that it was actually Fife Council ?

Bax, I think you might be right in that it's Fife council's responsibility. Although the most accurate answer to Beano's original question is "nobody".

The missing drain rod cover is still missing after over a year. There's a lot of gravel on the bus lane too so it really needs swept in conjunction with the road being cleaned but I suspect Bear are ignoring this section of the road in advance of the new bridge opening.

Bad news for the fife feeder ride I'm afraid, looks like the Dalmeny diversion is still going to be in place.

"I have spoken to my site supervisor today regarding the reopening of NCN1 between Chapel Gate and Burnshot. While the path surfacing works are now complete, there are still a number of minor snagging tasks remaining which will require to be addressed early next week before we will reopen the cyclepath. Unfortunately this means that the path will remain closed over the weekend, and the temporary diversion route will still be in place.

I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If you would like any further information, please let me know.

    Regards,

    Callum"

Thanks @acsimpson. I'll make sure ride leaders know that the diversion will be in place.

Russell road is also looking a bit dodgy for 100s coming of NEPN from Fife....

Hmm, path surfacing didn't look complete to me when I passed on the bus this morning. There were a couple of stretches that looked like they had a layer of tarmac to go on (manhole covers sitting proud of the surface, etc). I suppose they may have finished those bits earlier today.

The bits that do look complete look good, though.

    It's open!

I had already decided that I was using the new path tonight no matter which barriers I had to hurl my bike over.
But much to my surprise, the way was clear, signs had been removed, and I had a clear run to Dalmeny.

Not that I'm given to hyperbole but the new path is AWESOME! Wide, smooth, crash barriers, anti-glare - everything a cycle path could wish for.
    I was so excited that I posted a video;

Big thumbs up to Callum at CEC - he had suggested that it wouldn't be open for Saturday's Pedal on Parliament but it looks like they pulled out the stops. I've sent him an email thanking him for his commitment, especially in keeping us updated.

    Great video.

I turned out of the Dalmeny road instead of the Kirkliston road the other week and found myself tangled in the road works and hurtling towards the A90.

Cycled it this morning. Great infrastructure. Shame the grass and debris strewn path on the North end has not been swept. Imagine if the renewed a motor way section but best bricks and wooden planks (equivolent) on the stretches approaching due to general disuse?

Looks good! Now we just need that to extend down Queensferry Road/A90 into town and we'd have a proper commuter route.

I'm looking forward to riding and running it later in the week.

There's plenty space beside most of Maybury Road to widen the pavement and link this route directly to the Gyle too.

Hopefully the Dalmeny Housing Development will improve the link between Dalmeny and Scotstoun Avenue too.

Took a spin through northbound today

Pity about the bit described in the full photo upthread, as there is definitely room for improvement there

and I think we're still going to get a drenching near the northern end from passing motor vehicles, due to that flood dip bit on the A90 being unaddressed ?

but yeah, minor niggles aside, nice work overall, chapeau !

bax, does the cycle path still drain onto the road or does it now drain the field. The shower facility was made all the worse by water being recycled between washes as the cycle paths drainage went straight back onto the road.

does the water not drain off the A90 into the side of the road, and accumulate from there ?

i'm having some trouble remembering exactly where the worst drenching occurs, to be honest

    we'll find out soon enough

I'm afraid I missed the perfect opportunity to view it from the bus last night. As you say it's only a matter of time (and timing) until one of us get washed.

Riding home towards Fife on it last night, got to the part where it veers right up to Dalmeny to be confronted with a contractors van parked and blocking most of the path. Then this morning on the way in there was a digger and a tipper doing work to the verge blocking the path. There were barries up partially blocking the path but I had to wait on the guy getting the digger out of the way so I could squeeze past. Guy looked hacked off that he'd had to stop work even though I gave an appreciative 'thanks'. Appreciate there may be remedial work required but a little frustrating given it's just opened!

    @acs

Went through northbound at 2pm after this morning's medium rainfall

Rainwater still pooling at side of A90, but now also collects directly on the cycle path itself, without draining to either side.

This might possibly mean that there is slightly less rainwater pooling on the side of A90, however the outlook remains treacherous during more adverse weather here.
