Got my bike back after it being a week in the LBS, so looking forward to getting rid of the grumpiness and trying out the new path tomorrow...

"Rainwater still pooling at side of A90, but now also collects directly on the cycle path itself, without draining to either side."

Such a pain dealing with cycle infrastructure drainage.

    (This is not the A90!)

Well I can confirm that the 'A90 shower' is still very much in existence. I received my second shower (the first one was a belter last year...by a bus..before I even knew it was an issue. to say I was caught by surprise was an understatement..anyway...).

I knew there was an issue with pooling but found it harder to time it with the anti-glare posts now being present. just had to go for it and timed it such that a car drowned me with mucky water. not a huge problem as it was lashing it down at some points on my commute home last night.

Rode it for the first time this morning and was very impressed. Made a very smooth run and as someone has mentioned above, once the Agilent area in Queensferrry is bypassed, there will be a great route from Fife to Cramond. Will miss Dalmeny Estate though - that was a lovely diversion...

In terms of water, it's an occupational hazard. I'll apply Rule #5 to myself, though that isn't a suggestion for anyone else...

Next Steps Cramond to Maybury and, especially, the A8...

Don't forget to apply rule #9 any time the puddle is there and you're passing.

also increases the gaming factor for lorry drivers

can i swerve into that water enough to get it up and over the posts to drench that oncoming cyclist?... lets see.. yes.. yes.. i can

Could a few sea-wall-shaped concrete blocks right next to the puddle redirect the majority of the splash back towards the road?

@winpig. Not as effective as they would be placed in the road to stop traffic hitting the puddle in the first place.

If they wanted to fix it then it would have been very easy to add drainage while upgrading the path.

I used the path for the first time today and it is a huge improvement on the old path. I'm not sure why they didn't listen to daveC's suggestion about raising the two agricultural entrances to the same level as the rest of the path although at least now the path surface is continuous through the bumps so you can pedal through them.

Does Rule 10 count if it's a change of path which makes you go faster?

    @acsimpson

guess it could do, I thought that too first time I rode it as well, though I soon realised that the "improvement" was more likely to be due to a big tailwind.

There's to be a formal opening of the route. No idea who'll be there...

A90 cycle route opening 15 May 9am at Burnshot

Formal opening?? Ha, what a waist of public money. The Minister turning up for a photoshot.

    ridiculous and utterly shameless.

its nothing more than a wee two minute stretch of pavement.

    "ridiculous and utterly shameless"

    Yes, but no.

It's actually a relatively large job/spend 'for cycling'.

Obviously the event is partly for the politicians to congratulate themselves on their 'generosity', but the more people who know about it the better - they might even demand more of the same to 'help' get to the 10%.

Perhaps some Fife commuters will travel a bit later on Friday(?)

@chdot I probably will. I don't think that improvements of this type can be taken for granted just because the A90 has been done.

I think they need a wee pat on the back and to be encouraged to keep up the momentum towards the 10% target and (on my agenda at least) to do the A8 next...

Callum at the council was appreciative of a note of thanks. His email updates were detailed, helpful and pretty accurate for estimated timings and it would be great if we got (a lot) more of the same.

At the Cycling Scotland conference last year, the Mayor of Dublin mentioned that in times of austerity, the only things he got to open were bike lanes. He regarded it as one of the political drivers for cycling infrastructure: if the politicians want to give themselves a nice pat on the back, they can get many more pats on the back for their money than if they're building roads. Of course none of this applies to the Scottish government where there seems to be an infinite amount of money to build roads, but may be an incentive for local politicians.

I stopped and spoke to the council representative to say thanks and give a thumbs up for the work and to say I hoped there would be more. However, I wasn't going to hang around while they deceided where to have the photoshoot.

20 -30 cyclists, mainly kids from Cramond and Dalmeny Primary Schools and maybe 4 photographers were there.

I have not travelled this path for a few years now, but by happy chance I am riding the Forth loop with some friends tomorrow early.

We are meeting at Barnton and using the path to the bridge - so am more than happy that this has been opened and looks like a pretty decent piece of work.

    Full review to follow.

All the new stuff out along the A90 path is really fab. What is really needed now though is some sort of treatment to make getting across to the Dalmeny Road do-able. Its hard to see traffic coming up the hill from the Edinburgh side, and traffic is moving really fast at this point.
What is needed is either help for cyclists to cross (traffic signals??), or something to slow the traffic.

Well, every car not ignoring the 40 mph speed limit would be a start.

Indeed, a speed camera within 30ft of the junction would certainly help.

Went past the work at the Cramond Brig last night after hours. Has anyone seen any plans as to what they are doing?

I hope the disruption is temporary, and they are not building anything silly to stop the filter onto the A90, as it will make getting to/from Cammo much harder - if I can gain momentum in the bus lane, it feels easier to filter into the traffic. Also the loss of momentum on the way up the hill is a pain.

Until I know what they are doing, don't think I'll use A90 route again and use Kirkliston/A8 in preference.

I've passed it a few times this week. It looks like they are just making the downhill exit to the A90 path wider and adding tactile slabs at the end.

As Tractor said, just improving the exit on the run down to the bridge.

Four Scottish Woodlands vans parked all over the cycleway outside Barnbougle Gate Lodge this morning.

Nice car park you've established there, lads.

@bax - I've noticed this is happening a lot since the new path was opened. Not just Scottish Woodlands.
