A90 Path news and helpful links

    Though it looks like major works starting just S of the B800 bridge over the A90 in in Queensferry. will have to see how that goes.

    There is still the option of reaching Standingstane Road by going through South Queensferry/Dalmeny rather than via the B800.

    @gibbo, Yes, they will close the path at the Bustop on the south bound off ramp at Burnshot. You will still be able to go both ways towards Army Scotland's HQ at Crazyhall.

    The climbs dont bother me in the estate, its just I'm not a roadie and don't really like cycling on the roads (prefer mtb'in). Came off in november at the Tesco roundabout in S. Queensferry due to a slick road.

    Is the Standingstone Road not really busy in the mornings/evening?

    I've been down there in the car and I've seen some people are heavy footed going along it!

    @zesty- then the coastal route through the Dalmeny estate is for you- it's beautiful, especially at dawn/dusk.

    When the Kirky crossroads are next out of action, try turning left into the new housingit leads to a cycle path at the back which comes out to the west of Kirkliston, turn right on Burnshot Road, then left and joint he Newbridge path there. I discovered it a few weeks back and its quite good. Prone to ice though.

    We must have crossed paths at some point. I'm usually wearing orange with a yellow specialized helmet. Say hi if you see me.

    I quite like the Craigies farm route @CB suggested.
    I know there's still a mile of main road at the end but bit better than standingstone road.

    @paddyirish, coastal path could be an option though

    Thanks will definitely give that a go.

    Will look out for you. I'm on a hybrid, yellow jacket and orange rucksack, often (though not today) with an empty child seat on the back.

    I like the estate - tucking down and flying down the hill and rattling over the cattle grid at the bottom. The climb out isn't too bad even for a fat lad.

    There was an amusing post on the CTC forum LEJoG section a while ago - the poster had been heading through Edinburgh on his way north and had come across signs about the path to the Bridge being closed and was concerned. However he met a helpful cyclist coming the other way and the local reassured him that the diversion through "the estate" was well signed.

    Our LEJoGer continued, expecting "feral youth and burnt out cars" only to discover that there is more than one kind of estate and the only hazard on this one was a sheep that wouldn't get off the road...

    I enjoy heading through the estate on a Summer evening but it definitely takes longer than Standingstane road. I don't find the climb heading out of town particularly steep but it is a bit longer than the one into town.

    If last years brief winter closure (when they felled the trees) is anything to go by they wont grit the diversion and ice plus gravel makes the decent out of town decidedly interesting. However they have been gritting the A90 path so it's possible they might cover the diversion too.

    Followed your suggested route through Kirkliston last few days and it works far better for me (especially this morning hwen tailbacks were worst I've seen) - thanks for that!

    Work should have started today, no sign of activity, or signage from Edinburgh side of path (I took Standingstane diversion) at 8:30 ish when I passed.

    Any diggers there yet?...

    @baldcyclist - I too took standingstane road for the first time. Cracking views but the tarmac looked a little rough on the other side of the road (at the dalmeny end) for coming back tonight in the dark.

    Ps it was me who turned to say 'alright!' just on the approach to the FRB (in my RP alba hi-viz).

    Beano, From memory over the summer it is quite rough through there. You need to make sure you keep in the middle of the lane as you go through the twisty stretch towards Dalmeny so that you can manoeuvre round pot holes as required. It's easier in the daylight but should be fine in the dark if you know it's coming.

    thanks AC, I must have been on the ball this morning as I nearly went the 'normal' way and then thought i'd be having to do it first time in the dark tonight (if they start work) so decided to try it in the daylight (which was lovely for a change) to see where the potholes were. Hopefully if its quiet I can stick to the middle and miss as many of the potholes as possible.

    The path is closed, although the surface hasn't yet been removed (or hadn't as of 8.30 this morning). Personally I wouldn't use it as it risks giving cyclist a bad name and could lead to more cycling budget being used to erect fencing round construction sites rather than tarmac on the ground.

    From what I can tell phase one is widening the slip road adjacent to section 2, presumably to allow two lanes to remain in place once the path has been widened.

    CEC is currently looking at ways of promoting this route so that more people know about/use it.

    Ideas include 'route to the Forth' - Queensferry has more attractions than Silverknowes or Granton.

    One idea is to encourage runners.

    I think a bit of promotion is a great idea. If this bit of path has a large uptake then it will really help the council's arguments when they want to build high quality infrastructure elsewhere.

    @fimm, Perhaps enough people will start using it that they could justify a segregated paths along Queensferry and Maybury roads.

    Personally I only run for leisure so wouldn't consider this a pleasant route for a run as it's straight down the side of a dual carriageway. It's a great A to B route but if you're out for a leisure ride/run there are much more pleasant routes in Dalmeny.

    Incidentally if anyone fancies a little off tarmac excursion during the current diversion this alternative through Dalmeny is available (There is a gate on it but it's not locked):

    Still trying to decide whether to switch back on to my 'scrubbed' set of Conti Gatorskin's for the grand re-opening of the A90 path.

    I know they are likely to be quicker but after sorting out my initial issues with the Marathon+ I have been enjoying mile after mile of P-free cycling (touches wood, turns around and touches toes etc).

    I have to decide whether I'm willing to increase the risk of me getting a P******* just to shave a minute or two off my commute (which invariably is determined by whether or not I come up against a tram).
