Errr....
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
No weaknesses highlighted just strengths and areas that need more focus.
These reports are every five years.
I would say that cycling infrastructure in Edinburgh is better now than it was in 2008.
although the winter drop off has yet to kick in I also feel there are far more people on my commute now than in 2008.
This is all relative but it is not just hype.
"This is all relative but it is not just hype"
True.
The article is basically the view of Cycling Scotland and there is slight confusion between 'better facilities' and 'improving councils'.
It is significant that there is much talk of 'segregation' - particularly from Jon Snow. Historically the CTC has been lukewarm (and, in the past, hostile) seeing it as a step towards bikes being banned from (more) roads.
Of course the emphasis/responsibility is still on local authorities.
Convenient for the Scottish Government and just what is expected from its creature CS.
CS's CAPS document does talk about the SG doing more.
So far it's authorised an 'education campaign', 'desk reviewed' the "evidence" for strict/er liability and given money for Leith Walk (not just cycling, but) and given more money to Sustrans for more routes (usually expecting LAs to match fund).
Not really enough for its targets/aspirations/wishful thinking of 10% by 2020.
Significantly increasing the "Cycling, Walking, Safer Streets money would be a good idea.
AND an end to 'washing of hands' approach to how LAs spend such money.
It's not about "ring fencing" it's about accountability - both LAs and the SG pretending it wants more cycling and that it can't do much more!
Chief executive Ian Aitken added: "I hope that the analysis in the report, along with the areas for development we've highlighted, will support more local authorities to develop local cycling strategies, as recommended in the Cycling Action Plan for Scotland."
Helpful I'm sure, but analysis and recommendations alone won't get improved facilities built. That requires political will and money.

It found “good work” in every council area, but the commitment to increasing cycling “varied considerably” and a “more coordinated approach” was needed in many areas.
