people, I am proposing to raise some much needed funds for the yoof groop I am involved in.So, I am looking for some Scottish, cycle routes, LIKE but in no way including the west highland way !I believe there might be a cross Scotland trail/way ? looking at between 150 to 250 miles,as much off main road as poss.Oh and if it could have any however tenuous links with aviation then that's even better ! any suggestions gratefully......you know the rest !

How about Stranrar (near Castle Douglas airfeild, disused) to Scottish Museum of Flight?
186 miles on quietest route.

You can get the traqin there via Carlisle.

If you like it rough, so to speak, a nice coast-to-coast route takes you from Fort William, along the Caledonian Canal to Fort Augustus, over the Corrieyairack Pass (OK, rough AND punishing) and along the back roads to Kingussie, then through the Cairngorms via Glen Feshie and Geldie Burn to Linn of Dee (OK, rough AND punishing AND remote).... Then Balmoral Estate, Ballater, Aboyne, Fungle Road (another 700m climb) to Tarfside, over the Angus Hills to Edzell, then minor roads to the coast at Montrose, where you can collapse onto the train. At least 50% off road, and most of the rest on minor / very quiet roads.
I did it in May 2010 (with the addition of a 'prequel' via Mull and Ardnamurchan; lovely if you have the time). From Ft Bill it's about 200 miles or four fairly long and tiring days, but fantasically scenic and rewarding if you get decent weather. You'd need a mountain bike and be prepared to travel very light, staying in hostels/B&Bs. Happy to share route details, photos etc. if you're interested. No links with aviation though that I can contrive...

Done fairly roughly. The first section, where I've just put in straight lines, is all off road, mostly Land Rover tracks but with a path that might have to be walked in places in the middle. The second section is on a very quiet dead end road. From Cannich you can go on the the coast if you want.No aviation connection that I can think of, though.

How about:
Start Rothesay
- Up the Isle of Bute - ferry to Colintraive
- Over the hill road to Holy Loch at Dunoon
- All the way up Loch Long to Arrochar (looping in around Loch Goil) (not sure how feasible this is)
- Over to Loch Lomond at Tarbert - then ferry to Inversnaid (do they take bikes?)
- Over to Loch Katrine then various options to get to StirlingThis links the locations of the first Scottish monoplane flight (1910) and the first Scottish biplane flight (1909)
According to this anyway:

cb this sounds like a fantastic wee jaunt ,getting to inversnaid would be great cause we are having our annual camp at loch ard, just up the road. Ive already broached the subject last night and it looks like we might have 6 or 7 willing people who actually cycle now, might get some more newbies as well ! Ill put forward these routes but yours seems best for varied skill/fitness levels although fort bill to Montrose sounds like it will be something I moight do on me own ! will keep you all informed !
