Analysis of Cycling KSI

Quite a good article but some weak points. As mentioned previously, many cyclist injuries aren't reported to/by the Police, mainly slight injuries but also some serious ones and the reported KSI numbers could change due to better or worse reporting even if the real number of casualties is the same.
The classification of severity can also change or changes in treatments can lead to changes in reported severity. eg if someone is admitted to hospital for an overnight stay it counts as a serious injury, so when hospital policy changed to keep all children with head injuries in overnight for observation some who may have been classed as slight injuries automatically become serious injuries for Police reports.
The measurement of cycling distance travelled is not very reliable. The final end of year estimates are based on manual counts as well, not just the automatic counters on main roads mentioned in the article. So unless there is a big change in the result we can't be sure if a change in rate of casualties per distance travelled is real or due to some other reason(s).
The inclusion of motorway figures in overall rates isn't helpful and could easily be seperated our to help with the comparison for cyclists and other non-motorway traffic.
The rate of cycling casualties will also be affected by rate of other traffic especially, as we've seen lately, the amount of large vehicles, and the amount of HGV traffic has increased over the last year, after several years of reductions.Posted 11 years ago # -
I forgot to comment on this bit: "Cycling may always pose some increased risk to the rider ...".
Or it may reduce the risk of many fatal diseases through a healthier lifestyle than many non-cyclists have.Posted 11 years ago #
