The City of Edinburgh Council, in partnership with Sustrans, is developing a scheme to enhance cycling and walking provision between Edinburgh and Midlothian. This scheme supports walking and cycling policies detailed in the Council’s current Local Transport Strategy and Active Travel Action Plan.

I can't remember if any of that rail line is used now? If not would make sense to extend the path to Gilmerton Road?
I cycled down the old railway recently. No problem at all to the junction at Gilmerton Station Road, (for a mountain bike) but then had to lift the bike (and myself) across the bridge. Followed the ever-narrowing path for half a mile or so to a point where I turned a sharp bend and went head first into head-high stingy nettles. It wouldn't take a lot of work to clear it as Nelly suggests though.
The proposals are good news for us Midlothianers... hopefully some kind of cycle path heading the other way towards Fairmilehead next!

I dunno. You wait ages for a new cycle path, then three of four come along all at once! ;-)
Once again, a widened pavement to create a shared path. Would it not be cheaper/more effective to segregate a portion of the tarmac and make that cycle only?
Anyone heard anything about the completion date for this new route?
On the ground, near Gilmerton there's a nice new path off the railway line to the road. However the bridge over Lasswade Road is not yet there. This part was due for completion by end June but they cancelled the road closure in June (presumably for the bridge installation).
Bridge is up. Perhaps the path will open soon.

Sometimes I get tired of jousting on the road with cars so a cycle path is welcome (especially getting past the bypass bit).
I took a wee trip down here last night - the new path's great! - and it seems that the old railway line past the Lasswade junction (heading East) has also been cleared of vegetation. Are there plans to tarmac this stretch too?
I was startled to come across the Gilmerton Station Road part of this yesterday. I began to rant about how the money could have been better spent putting routes across the centre of town WHERE PEOPLE ACTUALLY CYCLE AND GET HURT. Madame IWRATS reminded me that I sounded like a retired Colonel writing to the Telegraph, so I shut up.
If this does lead to nice quiet roads with pubs it will indeed help to lure my good lady out more often on her bleu-blanc-rouge Frankenbike.

Of course you forgot to say the words "as well"!
'Historically' CEC has been very reluctant to improve, or (as here) create new, 'cross-border' routes, so this is 'progress'.
On the Midlothian side of the border the tarmac has been in place for several years!

This seems to be open now . I'm looking forward to trying it out.
New ramp and bridge at Lasswade Road Roundabout now open, good quality 3m wide section that links up to existing track and gives a good section of traffic free cycling. And no stupid chicanes, tactile paving, or cycle blocks to make it difficult. I'd go as far as saying this is a good example of cycling infrastructure in Edinburgh!
Looks like there may be a plan to extend this long the old railway in future, although this has been carefully fenced off to stop people trying at present.
I tried this out today. It's good and already quite popular. It could do with a clean and sweep (especially the older bit)

I think the idea is that families from Roslin and Loanhead can sneak a look at Gilmerton across the fields before returning.
Actually they're planning a shared use pavement up to the roundabout by the Murrays. Not sure what else is planned.

Think the idea is to continue along the Burdiehouse Burn but that's not ideal.
The path just finished is at least two years 'late'. You'd think CEC would have managed to get the connections in place...

Path along The Wisp is largely complete beyond a few details and widening at the north end. I rode up this with the trailer under the assumption it's to be shared use (can't be that much foot traffic between Danderhall and Newcraighall?
Looks like a lot of new housing going in on the hill above the Jack Kane centre, on the right as you go up the Wisp.

The footway alongside Lasswade Road as far as Lang Loan is nearly unrideable; narrow, rough, overgrown, strewn with detritus etc. It's hard to get from the road at the roundabout and onto the path without this bit of footway being there.

Further to my email dated 13 February 2015, please find below an update on the Loanhead to Gilmerton cycle route project.
Following discussions with the contractor appointed to undertake the improvement works, it has been decided to delay the construction of the Lasswade Road section of the route until June 2015. Further information on the proposed traffic management arrangements (including details of road closures and diversion routes) will be available in advance of these works.
It is currently proposed to carry out the lighting works on the cyclepath along the disused railway line between Lasswade Road and Midlothian from Monday 23 March 2015. In order to enable the works to be carried out, it will be necessary to temporarily close this path between the City Bypass tunnel and Lasswade Road for safety reasons. Signage will be erected on the cyclepath in advance of the works to advise path users of the forthcoming path closure.
If you would like any further information on the Loanhead to Gilmerton cycle scheme, please do not hesitate to contact me using the details below.
The Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience which may arise during the works, and we will seek to minimise any disruption where possible.

Really disappointed to realise that Lasswade Road from Captain's Road is to remain at 40mph in spite of it being 'lead-in' to the off-road path.

This includes the section where the Burdiehouse Burn Path has to cross the road.
Sustrans Scotland have been undertaking route feasibility work for the disused railway path which runs between Lasswade Road, alongside Gilmerton Station Road, under Gilmerton Road (Drum Street), over Old Dalkeith Road and links to the distributor road for the recently developed Shawfair Park. During this time we have met with Local Authority Officers & Planners and a number of key landowners.
I am pleased to provide a Feasibility Report Briefing Note. We have made positive progress and are confident that we can further develop this link with potential for delivery in 2017 (subject to funding).
