  1. Tried some of the new and newish paths from the Gyle into town the last few weeks and am really struggling to find a way from Haymarket Terrace, on to kings Stables Road without getting off and walking for a bit.

Anyone know how its done (legally)?

West Maitland Street > Torphichen Street > Canning Street > Canning Street > Western Approach Road > Lothian Road > Ah, no right turn there.

There's no right turn from Shandwick Place to Lothian Road.

So I guess you have to go to West Maitland Street > Atholl Place > Manor Place > Melville Street > Randolph Place (bumpy) > the cut through > Charlotte Square > South Charlotte Street > Princes Street > Lothian Road > King's Stables Road. Hurrah!

    Doesn't seem particularly cycle-friendly though.

Which bit of Kings Stables Road?

For access to the Grassmarket end I'd go West Maitland St > Torphichen St > Morrison St > Bread St > West Port.

For access to the western end of KSR, I'd go with douglaswaring's suggestion of Canning St and the West Approach Road. Is there some restriction on getting onto Lothian Road and KSR from there?

Yup. Left out of Canning to WAR is fine, left out of WAR to Lothian Road is fine but right into KSR is bad. You can go right into Castle Terrace and then either dismount to walk across one footway to KSR or go through Castle Terrace NCP.

...or if you're an ace mtb'er, straight down the Barrace Steps from Castle Terrace to KSR? That probably doesn't fit with the 'legally' bit though... Carry the bike down?

I suppose you could nip through the barriers into Castle Terrace NCP and go round & round all the way down to KSR.

It seems that the only legal "no dismount" routes are the Charlotte Sq option or the West Port/Grassmarket option.

Or if you're an extreme downhiller, you could bump down the steps at the end of the car park!

  9. Think I will try the torphichen street Dewar place west port option tonight

Was trying to keep it flattish but will have to try for a dewer place KoM ;-)

Tait for the advice, real shame there is no right turn from shandwick to Lothian. Bloody council

Watched a chap do that at the end of the Broomhouse Path, from the tram bridge down onto Stenhouse Drive. Wouldn't be my choice.

My downstairs neighbour is an MTBer, and one of his pals always* bumps down the rounded stairwell. Full sus device, naturally. It actually looks impressively smooth, which either means full-sus is amazing, or he's an excellent rider.

    *both times I've seen him.
