I have a semi regular route, balerno to mid Calder meet my pal Ian coming from Broxburn, cycle to Woolfords speed sign (28mph for me today, which was not bad). Auchengray, Wilsontown, Braehead carnwAth then lang Whang home. After the descent from Braehead you climb up a curious narrow ridge which Ian was able to tell me about. it is part of the cartairs esker. An esker is a feature of glaciation caused by a river running underneath the ice sheet. I do like features of glaciation. Related features called Kames are also found in the Carnwath area as are the unrelated mini rhubarb pies in the apple pie bakery.

I like glaciated landscapes too. Meltwater channels are responsible for some vicious little climbs (at the Brunt, Garvald, Carfrae, Townhead near Gifford, Crichton, Biel).

I've cycled the Braehead - Carnwath road a few times and I think I know the feature you mean, but the next time I am out that way I will have to have a look out for it.

When we were learning about the glacial landscape in first year Uni, I always liked the term "pingo". Drumlins are common round these parts.

Perhaps pingo can be the new 'secret word' for the drumlins that cause p*nctures(?)

For esker fans there is a good example south west of Duns (just south of the B6456). Stand out a mile on the OS map (and are marked as The Kaims)
