I decline to be optimistic that this might possibly reduce the use of the phrase "car tax" in discussions about cyclists...

Aye I saw this earlier.
It occurred to me it will be much easier for untaxed vehicles to be driven after this change, as there'll be no immediate visual cue as to who has paid and who hasn't...

They are going to insist all cars have a yellow, illuminated sign on top with the word "Taxed" on it. When it's illuminated, you'll know it's driven by someone who pays their tax and owns the road. When it's out, you'll know they still think they own the road, only driven with even less care for other road users

I like the idea of the monthly direct debit.
I'll let you all get back to bashing it ;-)

Well I think the nice helpful "paying for the roads" sidebar on that story should disavow that notion!

[...] but since 1937 the proceeds have been dropped into a big Treasury pot - something mourners may bear in mind when contemplating their comedy disc holders for the last time, with their declaration: "I've paid my tax, now fix some [unrepeatable adjective] pot holes." Or when shouting similar indignant sentiments (with adjectives) at cyclists. The truth is that Tax Disc money is as likely to be paying for canal dredging or bank regulation as it is for cats' eyes.

If they want to impress me with their progress they could end the lunacy of a plastic licence *and* a paper licence and finally get rid of the paper element (or indeed bin the plastic one and revert to paper).

That would need Courts, DVLA, Fiscals and Police to get together to work out an electronic alternative to marking endorsements on the paper copy. Entirely feasible but it seems to be at the top of nobodies priority list at the moment. Might be easier in the future as, in a couple of years, all Courts, Fiscal and Police in Scotland will have one main IT system each. Just need to get DVLA along as well.
