Did we not have a thread on this? I can't find one.

Short version - specialised was threatening a Canadian bike shop with lawsuit over use of their trademark 'roubaix'. (I'll see if I can find some links and paste them in later)

Anyway, this post was because I just found out that - bizarrely - I appear to have helped break this story in the Canadian press. Yes, there was a local newspaper story, and all the internet guff, but it wasn't until I put a link on Fb and tagged an old (sortofboy)friend who works for Canadian press, did they write a story in it (he couldn't do it himself, but his colleague did). The even crazier thing is that he actually lives and works in Edmonton, in the same province as the guy and the shop. But he tells me that my post was the first he'd heard of it. And he's a sports reporter (and well embedded in the cycling scene there).

I wonder how the residents of Roubaix feel about this ? It appears that they now have the threat of legal action from Specialized every time they open a business incorporating their name ?

& not very intelligent business either. They have certainly tarnished their reputation.

Sadly, Specialized is doing the same to Epix now. I received a letter today from their lawyers- Our logo is in their eyes too similar to their “Epic” MTB frames logo. The text is DIFFERENT. The logo stylization is DIFFERENT. We are not competing for the same clients (apparel vs frames). They are over-reaching, as they did with the Roubaix bike shop. They withdrew that case thanks to social media pressure, and we would be very grateful if everyone could support us in our efforts to fight this!

Specialized founder Mike Sinyard has moved quickly to stop a threatened legal action against North Carolina cycling and triathlon clothing brand Epix Gear for trademark infringement, and says the company is reviewing how it deals with such cases in future. Epix had appealed to social media users for support after receiving a letter from lawyers acting for Specialized – which earlier this week dropped claims of trademark infringement against Alberta, Canada-based bike shop, Café Roubaix.
