Noticed on Public Contracts Scotland that Glasgow City Council has awarded a contract for a Glasgow Mass Automated Cycle Hire Scheme to Nextbike of Germany (www.nextbike.de). £401k.

    Weegies have launched their system.

I wonder how it will do?

"This is the latest step, in addition to the millions of pounds we're investing on cycle routes across the city, to making Glasgow one of the UK's most cycling friendly cities."

    Lol!

    Sounds good.

It will certainly be useful to see how much cycle use in Glasgow increase - this scheme will probably double (or more) it rapidly.

    "

Mr Matheson said the council's long-term aim was to "see cycling as the biggest participation activity in the city by 2020".

    "

Interesting use of words - can't really mean 'more than walking'.

Will they be counting commuters, shoppers and other utility users as "participating" in cycling? If so that's a seriously forward thinking goal when you look at the number of people "participating" in driving at the moment.

    Presumably

"If so that's a seriously forward thinking goal when you look at the number of people "participating" in driving at the moment."

Suspect driving doesn't count as "activity" in this case - which is sensible.

Having more journeys by bike rather than car would be a good goal - and doable.

Perhaps CEC could apply for Glasgow2014 Legacy money...

I'm sure they're excluding driving but I'm not sure that should be the default position. I'm sure motor racing in all it's guises would count as an activity so it's surely got nothing to do with how active the participant is.

So why does my choice of vehicle change me from being a participant to a non-participant?

"So why does my choice of vehicle change me from being a participant to a non-participant?"

Based on the notion of 'active travel' - though that can also be used to mean bus travel ('cos you have to walk to/from bus stop).

Can't see there being more cycle journeys than bus ones.

Yes I'd agree that driving isn't active travel but according to the BBC:
"Mr Matheson said the council's long-term aim was to "see cycling as the biggest participation activity in the city by 2020".
With no mention of travel I read this as either a pastime which people are engaging with such as playing golf, going to the gym, stamp collecting etc or a broader categorisation of anything a person might be doing at a time rather than being physically active.

So one way I would read this is to categorise leisure cycling, go-karting, etc as activities and exclude commuting/driving as bike/car use. Otherwise I would include utility bike use then struggle to find a definition which stops driving from being an activity.

Oh come along now, it means absolutely nothing and the result will be that no matter how much of an increase (or decrease) there is in cycling, they can claim it has been a massive success by simply positioning the goalposts wherever they want retrospectively.

Despite the cynical PR puffery, the scheme looks good and I wish it well.

    Interesting snippet:

Glasgow Bike Station, the charity advocating mental and physical health through cycling as a means of transport, has won the contract to carry out all bike maintenance.

    Well done!

That is great news from the bike station!

Am I right in understanding that you need to sign up prior by phone/app before you can rent one?

A Glasgow 2014 spokeswoman said "... We’ll continue to ensure measures are taken to enable as many people as possible to cycle. This has included installing parking provisions for 1,000 bicycles.”

Out of a million expected event seats.

    Way to go.

I saw quite a few of the bikes in use when I was in Glasgow last week. I might use one next time I visit my parents.

Judging by the number of empty racks around town they must be getting used. As the racks are just standard Sheffield stands they could do with installing bike parking adjacent to each stand as almost every set of stands had non rental bikes attached.

That is cool. Encouraging news that the scheme looks to be successful.
