Odd junction on Telford Road

I happened to be driving (booo) up Telford Road the other day, and came to the traffic lights where McDonalds is on your left. I discovered that there's a yellow box thingy which you're not allowed to stop in, followed by what looked like about 4 feet of space, and then the ASL. I managed to stop before the yellow box area, because my car is quite long, and I couldn't see what else I could do. This confused the car behind me.

I find this junction odd, because I can't think of any car that would be small enough to fit in the space. But realistically, I also suspect no other car would do what I did, because you're stopped absolutely miles away from the lights, and thus it does feel really quite odd?

Unless it's been changed since Google were there then you're probably a bit out with "4 feet". Probably looks smaller, when viewed from low down at a distance?

The Astra (?) on the Streetview pic is just about fitting in the space:

I'm sure I've seen similarly small and smaller gaps between yellow boxes/Keep clears and stop lines.

    The mini roundabout
in Davidson's Mains doesn't leave very much space between the Zebra Crossing and the Give Way line.

There's a similarly cocked up junction at the five way traffic lights downhill from King's Buildings, where Blackford Avenue, West Savile Terrace, Charterhall Road and Maurice Place meet:

Car drivers usually ignore the KEEP CLEAR instructions. (As also happens on Lady Road at Cameron Toll http://goo.gl/maps/5Q5Zo )

In the Googol maps pic, I notice there is a tipper lorry parked on the pavement while the driver goes for a McS***e

Yes, that Astra does indeed look like it just fits. I felt my car could barely get half of it in the space. This leads me to suspect that either (a) my ability to judge sizes is naff, (b) my car is ludicrously long, or (c) they have changed the junction since that picture was taken. It's potentially all of the above. I'm rarely going that way, but I might have to take a detour now, because I'm utterly convinced it was smaller than an Astra!
