Meanwhile in Göteborg

'Moving by Bike' is in latest issue of Velo Vision as some saw at PY this morning. (Swedish theme you see!)

Founder Johann Erlandsson started Sweden's largest environmental forum - now also in international guise here Ecoprofile - looking at mobility, energy, food and other consumption

He then did some years as a researcher in Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg / Göteborg (note Scots influence on West coast of Sweden here).

His desire to do something practical to demonstrate an alternative to electric cars is very interesting.
:"Transporting people and goods in an electric car consumes ten times more energy than doing the same in an electric bike".

Joahnnn has joined forces with MoveByBike in Malmö to sart a franchise of this company in Gothenburg and has also designed a prototype electric assist vehicle called the Velove.

In Edinburgh we are seeing a small move towards this but items like charge points for electric cars are much more likely to get good coverage in the media. Much of this is simple economics as self reliant bike use - even with electric assist - is just too cheap and doesn't do advertising - yet.

I invited Johan to post back on this as he's interested to know how we 'restrain' cycling here ;-)

I just told him LB sold three cargo bikes in one year which was three times more than we expected....(!)

Apparently he can't post as he's not in UK. That can't be right - we can maybe clarify? Good to have views from elsewhere I would think? We do cover things happening outside Edinburgh all the time.

You need to come back in a year when there is a new bike-friendly ferry for crossing the Gota river, and then again in a few more years when the current Gota river bridge has been replaced with a new, more bike friendly Hisingen bridge! :)
"Interesting to think about Gothenburg as a role model for cycling, we usually think about that we are way behind Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Malmoe etc... But with 9-10 % share we have more than double the number than you guys! :) Tried to register but it is blocked for people outside the UK, and maybe that's for the best, it is a local forum. Cycling went up 30 % here this september compared to september 2012! It sure is a positive trend now. The city have started to do something for cycling, and if you build it, they will come... :)"

JP and TwoWheels are in the US, so Johan ought to be able to register. Maybe chdot can check the member list.
