Now this may just be a kinda paranoia about things for sale on Gumtree, but if a bike is missing its seatpost and saddle it screams to me a bike that was locked up, with them removed by the owner.

As does the Kona MTB a few links down. Wouldn't have thought it was a common thing to lose?

I could understand someone keeping a saddle they really liked to put onto another bike. But the seatpost as well?
Nice Raleigh Merlin on there just now - right size for me. But can't really justify it.

He seems to have a lot of bikes for sale, similar chat about each 'Frame is straight, bearings good and tight, plenty of life left in the chain' on a few ads.
oh......and there is another one with a missing seatpost / saddle further down.
Hmmm

Ah, interesting - in this ad he mentions he runs a bicycle business. I wonder, actually, if this is someone who buys loads of bikes from the likes of the police auctions (which would explain some of them ahving the seatpost and saddle removed, i.e. recovered stolen bikes) to sell them on....

Aye there's someone in the old town who was selling a whole load of old steel racers a couple of years ago via Gumtree. I was looking for a frame at the time and saw a few ads by the same person. Seems he is still at it...

He's the guy I bought the iron horse from. I can't remember what he did/does for his main job, but when I asked him how he consistently found so many bikes(when I'd been looking without much luck for some weeks) he said his job takes him all over the country anyway, so he just scours GumBay centred around the route and location of whichever place he's going to that day.
He didn't come across as a kleptomaniac, certainly not a ned.
