It appears that neither of my in-use road bikes have front derailleur barrel adjusters, but I'm not convinced that it is possible to purchase such things. I can easily find rear mech adjusters and brake adjusters for sale on teh interwebs, but nothing for the front mech. Even if I could, I'm not sure where I would put them; near the top of the down tube would seem reasonable, but I'm not sure you can get an adjuster to fit in the housing where your outer slips into? Does anyone have any suggestions or advice about how to go about adding barrel adjusters for my front mech?

Front derailleur barrel adjusters

You can get inline adjusters. They can be placed between two sets of cable housing between the bars and the downtube.

I've seen them put a few inches out from the brifter, but personally I've not bothered fitting any to mine. In my experience new cables strech a bit over the first hundred miles or so but that's it, so set them then and then forget about it unless a problem develops.

I put some in because it seems a little tricky to get the cable tension just right on the front derailleur without one.

The normal place for barrel adjusters for the front mech is at the cable stops on the down tube. I'm pretty sure every road bike I've bought has them as standard, it's only older bikes with friction front mechs that don't tend to have them.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm needing them for. I spent about half an hour this morning trying to adjust the front mech on my commuter using only the 5mm hex screw which holds the cable in, and despite 10 separate attempts, all of which are really pretty random, it's still not right. I find it impossible to loosen the screw and either pull or push the cable by a very slight amount in one specific direction. By the end, when I gave up, the cable was also in a much worse condition, having frayed and a couple of strands have broken. All very frustrating. If I had a barrel adjuster, I'd be able to tweak it one direction with confidence!
I shall have a look at the inline ones, that's certainly an option that could work well.
@Cyclops - my two road bikes are 4 years old and 1 year old; maybe I'm just unlucky!

Or blind. I have now discovered the barrel adjuster on my 4yo bike, in the obvious place you would expect it. I must've been sleeping. I still need one for the 1yo bike though, so I've got an inline one ordered from Wiggle.
