Came across the heritage paths website. Designed to promote old paths. They are part of SRoW. Nice 1912 map you can interact with. I followed the thieves road from little vantage on the A70 to West Linton then from there to Peebles. Then short hop to route to St Mary's Loch. Inwas hoping to get to England but the paths around st Mary's loch Peter out in the middle of nowhere.

Looking at the map in the Scottish Hill Tracks book published by Scotways as the SRoW Society is now called, it shows quite a network of paths (not necessarily heritage paths) that would take you from St Mary's Loch across the border to Kielder. A couple of miles of road involved at Newcastleton. But how much of the tracks are rideable on a bike is another matter.
My wife and I once took the tandem over the path north from Megget to the head of Manor Valley. It was at Easter and involved wet feet and a lot of pushing. Good fun but keep meaning to go back when it's a bit drier.

I'd really like a fat bike to explore these sorts of path... bit less pushing I suspect!

It would be neat to see how far you could get with minimal road riding.
