I seem to have lost the rear mudguard flap off the Brompton. Any suggestions for bodging a replacement until I can get to BikeTrax? I'm getting splattered...

'Normal' ideas usual involve cutting up plastic things - washing up liquid bottles etc.

BUT the quickest and simplest way to make mudflaps (not just as a temp replacement) is to use gaffer tape.

Make sure mudguard (esp inside) is clean and dry. Cut a piece of tape more twice as long as the required flap.

Stick a couple of cms inside, fold tape roughly in half and stick two sticky sides together. There should be a spare few cms to stick on outside of mudguard.

You can now cut rounded corners to make it look slightly more elegant.

    Usually lasts months.

    Cheap...

some plastic milk jug inside the gaffer tape can be used for re-inforcement.

+1 for the cut up milk carton.
"rear mudguard flap", do you mean the one on the front 'guard or am I missing a mudflap!?
If it's the front one I'd skip the duct tape and just cut plastic from a milk carton to shape and bolt in place.

I've older Chromoplastics with flaps front and rear, but newer sets I've bought only have the front flap.

Rear guards that aren't full length usually have a little raised bit at the end. Is that classed as a 'flap' (given it doesn't actually flap)

    Thank you.
Where do I obtain gaffer tape?

It is the rear mudguard. I'm sure it did have a flap, and I can't see any other reason why I would suddenly have dirt all the way up my back after cyling home last night.

Look for "Duck" brand in any hardware store, or larger supermarkets.

Ah, it is the same thing as Duck tape? I have Duck tape. (unfortantely it is red Duck tape - at least it will go nicely with my new red handlebar ends...)

    Yeah, many names, brands

Lidl had silver for about £2 last week.

Strictly speaking, you probably want duck tape rather than gaffer tape. Gaffer tape is designed not to leave sticky residue when you peel it off again - such as when taping down wiring on stages or studio floors.

Duck, from cotton duck (with adhesive), although mostly it's synthetic now. And duct, from back when it was popularly used to repair air ducts.

Most pound shops or DIY stores sell it as 'duct tape'. See how Americanised we have become?

Duck tape, duct tape, gaffer tape, black nasty, harry black... There must be some more names I've missed :-) all now seem to be used interchangeably for broad, strong sticking tape. :-)
No flap on the back of my mudguard, must go and look at some pictures of other Bromptons now...

I've got a greater and lesser flap - the lesser to the rear... cb is correct that the lesser one is more rigid!

Brompton do list the flap without the full mudguard.

@Roibeard, yep, that's the thing, cheers. I intend to get a proper new one, but got properly mockit last night, hence the request for a quick'n'dirty bodge...

Alas, I have no Duck Tape left. I did make a bodge with some blue tape and a piece of yoghurt carton, but I'm not sure it will stay on very long. It didn't fall off this morning, mind you.

Thank you for all the advice. I'll get on to BikeTrax at the weekend (and put Duck/gaffer tape on the shopping list).

I must thank folk for the tips - with a few strips of gaffer* tape, and a few sections of cut up beer can**, I've usefully extended the SKS raceblades I use on the chameleon, which will serve as a commuter for a while...

*Duct and gaffer tape have different glue apparently - gaffer doesn't leave a residue that attracts dust, so theatre's prefer it for marks

**Each to their own... My milk has a few days left, the beer can was empty...

This was pretty much made for the job, in more ways than one!

Update: BikeTrax didn't have any flaps in stock but expect a delivery by next weekend. My bodge is holding (somewhat to my surprise...)

There were a couple of mudflap-looking leathery things on their back wall yesterday lunchtime... assume they were Brooks rather than Brompton seeing as they were next to all the saddles.

@wingpig possibly. They did have a Brompton front flap, just not a back one.
