I agree with Sally that "assemble freestyle at Parliament en masse' might be a bit daunting to some. So managed procession it will have to be.
    I also agree with insto about the minutes silence and bell ringing. (Could be done at both ends tho.}

They did all manage to assemble freestyle at the Meadows though. Safety came in numbers from the huge organised rides in from various places.

Personally I would favour the Parliament on a Saturday but I don't have children and am not really in most peoples demographic.

I can't imagine too many families would want to pedal to the Parliament from Glasgow though!

local mostly-self-organised feeders could help encourage people not keen on riding alone along

that's certainly how they do it in Berlin.

I think it is worth trying to get the Council onside for the Saturday. They do let a huge march of drunken bigots follow a very similar route to PoP on a Saturday (only joking - I really mean "let the Orange Order celebrate their traditions").

While I can see the benefits of just assembling at the Parliament, I can't really see crowds of people turning up just to stand in one place. What makes PoP unique is that it is a defined ride - certainly that is its attraction to me. I think the alternative is a much harder sell.

@Morningsider - been there, done that, and unless the staff involved have changed, the Roads section and Lothian Buses will veto it. And I really do mean "veto", and one based on a shadowy committee whose membership, agenda, or minutes aren't public...

@sallyhinch, in response to your question about the family angle...
I am unlikely to get permission from Mrs Greenroofer to bring any small Greenroofers to POP3 unless it's clear that it's an event very similar to POP1 or 2 (i.e. a mass ride to the Meadows followed by a safe ride down the Royal Mile).

There are widely differing views in our household about the appropriateness of taking smallish children on the road on bicycles. I took one small Greenroofer on POP1 on a trailer bike when she was in P2, and couldn't go to POP2. For POP3, small Greenroofer would be on her own bike, so it will be quite a hard sell for me to get permission for her to go...

The issue of how 'family friendly' POP is seems to some extent a red herring. How are these families getting to the Meadows in the first place? How do they get back home the Parliament? Either they are:

a - taking kids on tandems/tagalongs/cargo bikes/trailers etc. on roads.
b - escorting kids on their own bikes, either on roads, off-road paths or kids riding on pavement (or a mixture of these).
    c - arriving/departing by motor vehicle.

So where is the difference in safety/family friendliness between assembling at the Meadows, then departing from Holyrood, and both assembling at and departing from Holyrood?

(In my own case, I attended the first POP event with my primary age son on a tagalong, we cycled through Edinburgh city centre to get to the Meadows. During POP2 he had something better to do so I came on my tod. If he had been available I would have brought him on the tandem, traversing the same city centre roads).

There's clearly a tangled web of restrictions and requirements to be traversed before a date can be set for PoP 3. It would be lovely to get as many kids along as possible, to mass and ride, and to have massive media impact. But...

Is it maybe getting to the point where the important thing is to actually set a date - pick one and stick with it?

I almost missed PoP 2 through the lack of publicity, due it seems to the late setting of the date. PoP is brilliant - if the organisers set a date in time then people will do whatever is necessary to attend.

    Hope so!

PoP's preferred date was 'decided' some time ago.

Someone even 'leaked' it on here.

Apparently it's 'not available' because of a sporting event.

PoP is not a sport of course!

Don't know the run route, but don't they normally start and finish relatively early?

Previous PoPs have been mid afternoon.

Might be better to concentrate 'disruption' on same day(?)

If not I'd say 'ask for Saturday'.

Last year's ride was a bit of a mess as it got so split up and therefore took longer!

Edinburgh is used to events/disruption - Festivals, sport, demos.

I don't think PoP should get special treatment, but so far there could be suggestions that it has had the wrong sort of 'special treatment'.

Though that might apply to the Sky Ride too...

The run is the BUPA 10 miles and it's route includes North Bridge, part of the Meadows, Canongate and Queen' s Drive. The finish is at Parliament. And while running will be over by midday, clearing the start and finish will take a lot longer.

It is not a small run in the park. Active participants will be many times the number of POP riders let alone the spectators.

Much as I feel uncomfortable asking other people to do and decide things....even a slug like me is starting to plan my post-winter weekends.

Any chance the PoP people on here could pick a date for PoP3?

Any date is frankly better than none.

Trust me, if we could, we would. Encountering obstacles. Lots of effort going on behind the scenes. Hoping to be able to say more on Monday one way or another.

Any news? Anything we can help with?

I've actually started planning a long weekend cycling....if I'm doing that then lots of people must be. I would hate to miss PoP3 and I'd hate to think the turnout was hit by people unable to plan ahead.

    Anybody?

Here, as far as I know. Booked, anyway. Wonder if the larger child will still be under the child-seat weight-limit? Shall get posters up at work and nursery asap.

    Just a reminder -

    "
    1. we can try and hold it on the Saturday (26th April). The original POP was held on a Saturday and the Saturday/Sunday thing has been the subject of much debate here last year. Pros: easier for people to get to Edinburgh, possibly more impact on the day. Cons: harder (maybe even impossible) to get permission for our chosen route, possibly less press coverage.

    "

    (1st post on this thread.)

    WELL DONE PoP negotiators.

Maybe it will be easier next time!(?)

Unfortunately one of the things we've had to agree to (within the time/date continuum) is that this does not set a precedent for any future events. However if it goes well (and the reason we got it is that it was so well done last time) then we can expect there to be even fewer issues.

One of the major issues this year was other commercial events causing road closures on the other dates we offered. Actually worked in our favour I guess as we have the saturday!

"this does not set a precedent for any future events"

Three years running should be enough of a precedent!

It's now a 'Classic Edinburgh Event".

Steve Cardownie will want to take it over...
