Just discovered this website on which much time has been wasted this evening. May be of interest to those of a history/photography/cartography bent.

Then you'll love this. It lets you overlay old maps or photos on current Google maps.

I've spent (some might incorrectly say, "wasted") many a happy hour poring over Britain From Above and tagging old factories and ships with the correct names.
The NLS Maps sites are great, although navigation can get a bit confusing between the georeferenced and non-georeferenced sections.

One of the perks of my job is that I get access to (almost*) the complete Ordnance Survey collection - right down to 1:2000 maps, and the historic archive, back to 1850 or so (although there are gaps in this archive). It's fascinating to see how towns and cities have developed.
Last year Edinburgh had the Britain from above exhibition round the town, and I had a blast cycling from location to location.
*I can't get access to the sea resources maps, I suspect that they're CIC

@EddieD - CIC? The Uni hasn't subscribed to that option, although occasionally it's offered free to tempt people into recognising its value. The charts are Admiralty rather than Ordnance Survey, so licensed separately.
Oddly enough the service is provided from the Uni to the UK academic community, even though we have to subscribe like any other institution!

Ah - I see.
I did find it humourous that even though we host it we have to subscribe to it :)
It's still one heck a perk though (and costs me more productive work time than almost anything else)

At the Museum of Edinburgh (Canongate):
Opens tomorrow.
"This exhibition explores material from the RCAHMS archive. Zoom in on a series of compelling aerial photographs which capture dramatic changes to the Edinburgh cityscape over the twentieth century."
