LE2JOG by conference bike! (and chance of a shot on it tomorrow)

I was getting my friend back to Waverley after a pleasant afternoon's cycle out to Aberdour when I came across this wonderful contraption being loaded onto its trailer on Waverley Bridge.

7 lads are cycling this 210kg monster from LE 2 JOG (started last Sunday) and have just arrived in town.

They said they'll be taking it up and down the Royal Mile tomorrow between 1-2 and 5-6 if you happen to be in the locality and fancy seeing it in action. They also said if you ask nicely you can have a shot. Just make sure you get the seat without the knackered freewheel that has gone fixed. Hydraulic car brakes from a VW Polo on it.

I don't get why it needs a trailer!

I presume if you towed it at road speeds it might knacker the transmission?

oh I didn't realise it's going the otherway. Then again the chap who I was talking through was getting through tins of value lager at a quite impressive rate...

There were two of these conference bikes (a red one too) heading down the High Street on Sunday, travelling at a snail's pace due to the number of people about.

Oh you have just reminded me, I saw it this morning turning from Princes Street down Leith Street this morning. Was getting some funny looks from people.

I think they travel at a snails pace anyway!

I too tried travelling down the high street on Sunday = big mistake. I then thought I'd have a whirl around the Arthur's Seat circuit = big mistake. I then went down MMW = big mistake.

I think I'll buy a big old fashioned horn as the bell doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Or maybe an oompa.

It sure is an odd looking device! At 210 kg that's 30kg per person no wonder it was on a trailer, its not going any where fast.

Closest i now come to town is Fountain Bridge now we've moved office from Queenstreet and for the remainder of August thats the closest I intend to.

August when Edinburghers go to ground!

It was the vast number of cars trying to drive /up/ the high street yesterday that amazed me. Obviously they couldn't go beyond Cockburn St, but it was gridlock all the way up from the palace.

Also amused by a young chap trying to pull out of a small side street / driveway and becoming increasinly frustrated by the continuous stream of pedestrians walking in front of his car. When he did eventually get out he showed us a thing or two, I can tell you, by driving /very/ fast (until he met traffic 100m later). I was hugely impressed. I think we all were.

@cb - possibly the same one I followed down the high street beeping his horn all the way (without slowing down of course, the sound waves would deflect any absent minded tourist or fringist who wandered out into the road)

We saw it this morning on an LB tour to Portobello . It was on Sir Harry Lauder Road (A1) heading east at around 9.45. Had a van behind it with flashing lights and trailer.

Estimated speed about 4mph. Rain was lashing down. Must be like being on a Roman Galley.

I notice that the bike here has changed colour - have I missed something?

There were two of them, the purple one was just ahead of the red one. I think you can just see it in the pic I posted (can't see it at the moment from here to check; pic was posted from an iPhone - first time I've done this. <proud face>. (However I did post twice by mistake. <embarrassed face> - thanks chdot for sorthing (I assume)))

the purple one was being stoked by some lads in what (I think) they refer to darn sarf as "6th form college".

Love the Roman galley analogy, lb. It didn't need a try on it to agree that going downhill in the facing backwards seat must be somewhat terrifying.

last week I was pushing my bike up through the festival throng between City Chambers and St Giles - the sleeping policemen were up, the zone was pedestrian. At the George 4th Bridge junction a car was edging down slowly through the crowds. He had turned left from the mound presumably and encountered the throng but gamely decided to plough on. His teenage daughter had extracted the road atlas from glove compartment and wrapped it round her head in classic teenage daughter 'I'm not with him style'. Roll on September when it will just be the movement in the tramworks again that we need to especially look out for and the festival driving will have gone.
