Given the state of Queensferry Road there should be a high quality cycle/walking route all the way through those woods linking up, at the west end, with the wee cut through lane at the Drum Brae junction.

And the residents of Barnton Park would relish living somewhere better connected to Edinburgh's cycle network.

    Never happen.

The path in the woods alongside the A90 Q'ferry Rd is done in detail here.

The path isn't worth using during the school commute hours, but I do use it relatively regularly outwith those times. I can't remember ever being challenged, but I do cycle with due deference to pedestrians when not on a road.

I've no idea what or who BPPA means, despite knowing many Barnton Park residents, and I can remember a sign or similar being there since I was at the school a long time ago.

It is an arterial route after all.

    For sure.

But some seem happy enough with the unwelcoming round the houses route sporting the wonderful bottleneck narrow carriageway at the residential tie-in on Barnton Avenue West

    Carriageway, eh? Aye, right..

Did this work finish as advertised, is the path open again?

As much as I've enjoyed going fast* again, I think I'm bored with the traffic on the A90 now.

    *relatively speaking.

@ Baldcyclist, see chdot's post immediately under the photos on the previous page for details.

ahh, I see. I had wondered why there were no posts telling me how wonderful, or terrible the path was... :)

The sign at Brae Park now says it is closed until the 8th.

Can anyone confirm if this now actually open today?

Might take a wander through on the homebound run

Sign was still up saying closed until 8th, presuming its the end of the day when they'll be finished.

I didn't cycle that way but if its open I'd love to as the detour was a pitb even with light end of term traffic!

Was all open last night when I went through, nice and wide with a few rumble strips in the middle.

Still had the signs up this morning (~0845) for the detour (although still saying the 8th). Wasn't feeling the joy on the commute so didn't check to see if it was open.
    Wish I had now...

    @acsimpson

Was that you that i saluted from the A90 this morning, at Cramond Bridge ?

If i was a betting man, i'd have put a serious wedge on that being the case

There's no way the general public, and by that i include contractors / council employees etc, will ever treat cyclists as bona fide commuters or road users, not in our lifetimes

I didn't see you saluting so can't confirm. I passed over the old brig at about quarter past eight this morning just in front of two others.

Popped through the new bit on my way home this afternoon.

    First thoughts?

They've turned it into a smooth wide cycle racetrack !

...With ill-advised repeating cobble rumble strips which are ineffective in stopping speeding, but will prove hazardous to cyclists on frosty icy mornings, particularly at the low speed that they are trying to encourage !

The council needs to be made aware of this low speed frosty icy hazard, as this will subsequently assist those making negligence claims next winter.

My rumination for the rest of the commute was, well, its easy to criticise, but what would would I have built?

The answer is "nothing". Infrastructure like this only makes sense where there is continuity throughout the route.

What they have done is built a wee stretch that's conducive to making haste.

What I would have done is built a proper cycleway right down Queensferry Road.

    What's the verdict of others?

There's "only" 4 generous lanes of motorised traffic and a fairly wide median and pavements in parts. No room for cycling in council's eyes.

By which I mean I entirely agree with you. But I don't think they've yet got the stomach to turn any of our urban dual carriageways like Queensferry Road, St Johns Road etc. from crowded, dangerous, high-pollution motor corridors into proper transport corridors that prioritise bus, cycling and walking over those intent on sitting one-to-a-wheeled-box every morning and evening, jumping from one red light to another at 40mph, but averaging only 15.

Path overall is fine, but, I think they have used the same wrong textured tiles (rounded top) at the beginning of the path (going downhill) as was originally used in the meadows upgrade.

Went this way on the way home (westbound).

    HOLY SMOKE BATMAN!

You can see why they have painted about thirty giant 'slow' signs and cut the path up with rumble strips because even with all of that it is unbelievably fast...

PS. the slabs are the wrong type - first because it's not segregated and so they aren't appropriate at all, but also because they're pedestrian ones turned through 90 degrees...

Dave, what route did you take from barnton when you headed south?

Today I went via Dalmeny, but my default is just to head straight to Kirkliston from the top of the A90 slip (just west of Cramond).

Then I go on the racetrack rat run to Newbridge and up the hill to Ratho, double back parallel with the canal then jump over the Livingston road at the closest opposition to get to Currie.

Recently I've found the drivers are OK, not sure what's up with that (obviously not a problem on the recumbent, but even on the racer).

Try the old railway line from Kirky, you will be surprised how good it is. In fact you can actually get on at the second bridge, on the right, but its not the safest or least boggy, forces you to walk up the ramp, but cont throgh 2nd bridge and then after left there is a track leading to the airport (wrong side) and under the bridge on the left is a ramp up to the path.

No thanks, would rather stay away from all the fumes being beltched out from the cars.

I think the current path is fine, rumble strips are fine and don't think they'll cause to much trouble even in frosty icy mornings.

Agree that the raised cobbles won't be much issue generally, but frost/ice is another matter, at low speed.

Not speaking out of personal interest, as I don't use this route habitually in the morning, and if in doubt i'd just bunny hop them anyway.
