Sustrans number confusion

    Hello,

Whilst going along the really enjoyable Penicuik to Dalkeith route, I cycled past some incorrectly signed Sustrans route numbers (I think). For example here in Penicuik, the route number is signed as 73 - concurring with the info on the route here.

However on the Sustrans site, this is clearly stated as route 196 - concurring with some signs you come across as you travel to Dalkeith on this route. According to Sustrans route 73 is from Kilmarnock to the Isle of Arran.

Is this a legacy sign problem? I'd like to let Sustrans and the midlothian site know, but I want to be sure I've not misunderstood. Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

It looks like 73 at Kilmarnock is a National Route (red numbering) whereas 73 at Penicuik is a Regional Route (blue numbering).

    See:

    http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/national-cycle-network/route-numbering-system

"The National Route numbering system is similar to the original A-road numbering system introduced in the 1920's, with primary routes radiating clockwise from London, and their branches adding digits to the primary number. National Cycle Network routes beginning with numbers 1-6 are generally in England, those beginning with 7 start in the far north of England and Scotland. Those beginning with 8 are generally in Wales and those starting with 9 are in Northern Ireland"

I guess this route is 196 rather than 7xx as it is a 'branch' from route 1.

"Sustrans is currently embarking on a project to re-number and re-classify Regional routes as National routes, which comprises the allocation of new two- and three-digit numbers to the routes in the same fashion as detailed above, making each route a branch of an established National route"

    and

"The present Regional route numbering system that is being phased out"

@cb - thanks for that - that's really helpful. I should have found that out for myself, I suspect that will all be renumbered as 196 evenutally then... something to tell MidLothian council..

I guess this route is 196 rather than 7xx as it is a 'branch' from route 1.

    But...

The only "1" road in Scotland is the A1, which NCN roughly follows and the rest are in the 6,7,8,9 series. It would not make much sense to allocate "1" routes in Scotland as they should be in England, surely?

It's only "similar" to the road numbering system.

The road numbering system divides the country into segments. The only 1xx roads in Scotland are clockwise from the A1.

The Sustrans system feels more like a tree/branch system. Based on the Dutch model according to the website.
