Tipper lorries in Marchmont

There are a lot of tipper lorries running about Marchmont (Warrender Pk Rd) building the new James Gillespie's school. On Sat I counted one approx every 10mins.

The tipper lorries look modern/new, but none of them have safety side skirts i.e. they are completely open at the side and their rear wheels are completely exposed, ready to mince anything or anyone that comes under them.

Interestingly, there are signs up on the site stating "No lorries to enter site without banksman". So these lorries are considered too unsafe to operate on a building site without a banksman, but it is absolutely fine for them to drive down a residential street where children walk & cycle!

    Anyone else concerned?

yep I was caught behind them the other day in the van and found it pretty scary looking at them - have deliberately avoided them on the bike, although there are a fair few around the junction of Marchmont Road and Marchmont Crescent at the moment too.

About half the mornings when I've trundled along Melville Terrace over the past few months there's been a tipper truck somewhere up ahead, usually turning up Sylvan or Argyle Place, occasionally with a dingbat cyclist trying to go up their inside when they've moved out to turn left.

Suppose they might easily crush some expensive building materials or perhaps bend a delicate Heras fence on a building site, so the need for a banksman is understandable.

What are the mirrors on these trucks like? And do they have notices about "Cyclists beware of passing this vehicle on the left"? (Not that I think these notices are the right solution, but they are a good idea for the situation we have now.)

This clip kind of sums up trucks for me. I understand the Clio driver was ok.

Not clear if it was a tipper or not...
