Yesterday evening, as I was cycling down Easter Road (which is not something I do regularly) I hit a pothole and went flying. It was at the junction with Albion Road, on the northbound side of Easter Rd - I have reported it. It is not massive but it is deep and perfectly sized for a Brompton wheel. I still don't know how I didn't see it in time as I am usually hyper-vigilant.

Damage to myself is just a series of large bruises down my right leg. Initally my bike seems ok but I need to give it a proper inspection. Hypothetically speaking, if the bike is damaged and money needs to be spent for repair, is it possible to claim back from the council like you can do it you are a motorist?

Oh and thanks to the guy who crossed the road to pick me and my bike up and check I was ok - feel guilty that I didn't offer to buy him a pint or something!

If anyone can get a photo of the pothole NOW that would be a good thing.
Also, see if you can check FillThatHole to see if the council should have know about it.

Hey fimm. My boyfriend took a pic of the pothole for me but it was dark so not the best. I'm not usually over that side of town so I'm unlikely to get a pic in daylight. I will check out fillthathole (for some reason I'm finding it hard to access the site at the moment)...

also I think there was a loose chunk of tarmac in the hole that may have been a big factor i.e. wheel may have gone over it, chunk moves and wheel slips/turns

    Yes.

    There's probably info/form on http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk

I'll be that way this evening if no-one gets there first.

@Wingpig don't worry too much about getting a pic as I have one in the dark that will probably suffice. Thanks for the offer though.

@chdot I perused the council website and didn't find much so I've sent a follow up email to my original pothole complaint to ask for a claim form. Will see what happens. I might not even need it but it was quite a bump, so I'll be impressed by the bike's sturdyness if it's all ok.

If anyone has any tips on what damage to look out for I'd welcome that too...

Friskiffla: sorry to hear this. Hope the bruises subside soon.

I'm sure other people on here can indicate what to look out for re: bike damage (and with far more authority than I can), but I'd check for undue give or movement across the whole assembly of your bike. Perhaps also have your partner check whilst you ride - what might not be obvious whilst checking it over stationary and unloaded may become apparent under weight when riding?

Other alternative is to take the bike to your LBS, explain what has happened and ask them to do a quick once over. Not sure if a paper quote for damage assessment and repair values would help with any claim from the council? Again, others probably far better placed to advise.
