Our car has died and gone to the great scrap-yard in the sky (Finlayson Auto Salvage, Musselburgh). We thought we would try the short rental schemes until we get another. There's the Car Club in Portobello. Has anyone used it? Are there others?

Yes, my boyfriend and I are in the City Car Club. We use that for hires of less than a day, and conventional car hire for longer than that (usually a weekend, sometimes a week or more).

I'm not sure what the minimum membership time for the CCC is. If one member of a couple joins, the other can join as well on a reduced rate (but can then rent cars in their own right, i.e. I don't need my b/f next to me to use ane of the cars).

What else do you want to know? (It sounds like you are not planning on going car free in the long term - if I'm incorrect on this, say so as I have more tips!)

I seem to remember a car club that had pickup/drop off at Queen Margaret Uni but Googling doesn't seem to yield anything

@fimm How long depends on how well we cope without one. The girls are older and we don't go away for the day as a family any more. I would love to manage without one. But my wife needs to deliver restored furniture to her customers.

@Cyclops One at QMU? That's walking distance. We have a friend who works there. I will ask her. Or even take a walk up there.

Cyclingmollie the City Car Club has vans you can hire in the same way as you hire a car. There are also different sizes of car available.

When I stop for lunch I'll take a look at what's available near QMU.

Thanks fimm, I've emailed my QMU contact.

I assume you are in Musselburgh somewhere? Unfortunately the nearest City Car Club cars I can find are in Portobello (High Street, Windsor Place and Rosefield Anenue).

If you go to their website http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/ and stick your postcode in, you should be able to see if there are any others nearer to you, if I've miss-guessed your location.

I did think I was going senile but a bit of Googling reveals the City Car Club did have cars at QMU in Musselburgh in 2011 and 2012. Maybe they've stopped?

@fimm, you guessed our location perfectly.

@Cyclops, that's a pity. There's no mention of QMU on the CCC website.

IIRC City Car Club membership is per annum. Not used it for years though so it may have changed. Not used a car in years, come to think of it...

I am told QMU staff have corporate membership of the City Car Club.

Cyclingmollie, why don't you just use Cyclops' van for delivering stuff? He's a very nice guy! ;O)

Failing that Murray Moves might be cheaper than buying a larger car/van, if you're only delivering stuff once or twice a month?

When our car died at Christmas 2012 we tried going carless but it only lasted 8 weeks! Josie was cycling the boys to school but the snow showers meant Louis (4) was crying and complaining, (though I never heard him - so it may have been emotional blackmail?).
