Was on radio this morning. Seems some hurried excavations are in progress.

Forrest Road Closure by LaidBackBikes, on Flickr

Bike lane is clear at moment although wagons are parked up close to lights.

23 and 27 are not running anywhere nearby going into town.

41 is allegedly still running onto George IV via Chamber St?

Status board here. 'Diversions till further notice'. Appreciate that for the many that are compelled to drive or use a bus this is not good news. Consequential boost for cycling here assuming they leave bike lane free.

Saw tweets from the Police last night, part of the road had subsided.

Wonder if there's something interesting under there?

It's about time something was done about that road anyway, rather than have it as a car park / gyratory system free-for-all.

It would make a huge amount of sense to close off Forrest Road to through traffic (bikes excepted) and replace the triangle of roads with a T using Bristo Place.

"Initial indications were that the hole was eight-foot deep, although police said it could be much shallower."

Cycled along Lauriston Place and through the new trafic free Forrest Road this morning. Thought it was a great initiative.

Usual idiot drivers passing "Road Closed Ahead" notices, and then having to attempt to U-turn into traffic when they reach the barrier. Keep seeing the same thing at St Peter's Place.

Pity the EEN didn't go for "Police said the busy road would remain closed until civil engineers were able to look into it."

(apologies in advance for photo rotation- not sure why that happened)

I think this is the original hole:

but they seem to be excavating and filling quite a few more too:

it would be a nice car free zone there I agree....

Do you think if we report all future potholes on FillThatHole as 8 feet deep they might get fixed more quickly?

    ;-)

Glad that I headed home relatively early last night else I could have easily fallen in... The council dug up and filled in several underground 'vaults' on my road nearby last year, which were at one point cellars that belonged to the tenement blocks or so I gathered; it seemed a bit of a shame to be losing out on the space that presumably belonged technically to the owners of the flats in some way, but I was mostly just glad that the council paid...

I think whomever reported it as 8 feet deep needs the small / far away lecture from Father Ted.

possibly - or some width/depth/height disambiguation. I've not helped matters by introducing another dimensional confusion...

You're breaking the 4th wall algo. Don't apologise for it. That's turner prize stuff.

Road open. There is a coned off section so a bit of a squeeze on the left where road and bike lane merges.

FRUSTRATED traders have hit out at the city council after a massive pothole which suddenly opened up on a busy road caused a day of chaos.

First reading the thread title, I jumped with excitement. Finally I thought, they are closing Forrest Rd, to make a pleasant cycling route from the Meadows to the High St.

Then my heart sunk when I saw it was only temporary.

    "Chaos"? Really?

def (from OED): Complete disorder and confusion.

One little road closure caused "Complete disorder and confusion". Or maybe just inconvenience. Perspective EEN, perspective. But then anything which involves motorists changing their routine is "chaos" to the EEN!

(Although, amusingly, I noticed that the definition also notes, appropriately in this case: "Origin

late 15th century (denoting a gaping void or chasm, later formless primordial matter): via French and Latin from Greek khaos 'vast chasm, void'." :-)

Sadly it's "chaos" to motorists too.

EN just 'reflects' this AND reinforces it.

note in the Chipwrapper's photo a cyclist merrily breezing past int he cycle lane. This was only possible as it wasn't full of parked cars / taxis / delivery vans as it always is (regardless of double yellowS)

True, chdot, and I nearly added that to my post. Like many papers, the EEN will pander to whatever group it can get a rise out of.
