    And a fire in the kitchen of German Doner Kitchen knocking it and the bunch of scofflaws they employ as delivery drivers out of action, would improve Lothian Rd no end, in the apparent absence of council action.

    North Meadow Walk - opposite Lauriston Gardens

    Used to be a kerb there, proud by about an inch, also prone to flooding. Some glacial progress, but missing any lines. Wonder how long before someone parks across it?

    The zebra crossing on the Canongate has been upgraded to a parallel crossing to accommodate cyclists. New tarmac in that it is now a raised table. Incremental addition rather than a radical transformation.

    This is the last bit of my almost entirely off road commute from Balerno to Waverley station car park.

    On its own it is incremental and improves the risk you have on a bike of drivers moaning you should dismount etc,

    Working backwards from the fake tunnel on the left of the photo you go under the real tunnel beneath the house where T. smollet resided within then down through moray house and up Dumbiedykes.. Some very slight car sharing here and also to left and right a short section of segregated path. Up to the Cowgate or down to Parliament.

    Climb at Dumbiedykes existing shared path up to behind the cop shop. Then. Round the cobbles, some cop vehicles. Then segregated path at Tills bookshop and round the meadows, then against the one way round the kings and short section to canal. Obviously we are still waiting for Canal Meadows link but that is anothe4 story, Canal to footbridge over Lanark Road and then up the paved WoL path all the way to Balerno.

    It is fricking fantastic.

    Great to see these small-scale additions.

    My experience of this crossing is cycling up and down the Canongate. I am a bit curious as to how drivers will react with people on bikes looking to cross especially those drivers coming downhill towards the cyclist crossing "lane". In the old setup have seen a few drivers not anticipate pedestrians emerging from the pends, not slowing down and simply blow through when a pedestrian from the pends arrives at the zebra crossing.

    Parallel crossings are still pretty new (in general, as well as in Edinburgh) so I’d be a little cautious but my experience on CCWEL has been good.

    With this crossing and the uphill lane on Holyrood Rd you have a decent link from Calton Road to NCN1/Meadows etc now.

    A link from Calton Road sure, but that still requires you to ride Calton Road. Few too many impatient cabbies on station fares and London Road-avoiders for my taste.

    At least the traffic light section is shorter so cyclists have a chance of getting through on green.

    Then sharp right up New Street and down through Moray House and segregated lane and up Dumbiedykes and round to meadows. As mostly segregated route from north gate of Waverley? Sort of works.

    Certainly took it all the way to Moredun the other night via innocent then craigmillar castle

    If I’m getting this right, you have to:

    - ascend New St
    - cross Canongate, why is there even through-traffic (except buses) on this street at all?
    - descend past Moray house
    - ascend Holyrood Rd
    - ascend again after Dumbiedykes

    I mean it’s not like cyclists are using their own precious energy in all of this.

    It’s almost like the Canongate, High St & George IV Bridge should be shut to through-traffic, providing a nicely graded route to the Meadows

    Renewed rather than new tarmac...

    City of Edinburgh Council's attempt to give cyclists the Paris-Roubaix-esque experience of travelling along Belgian cobbled roads appears to be at end. The cratered surface of Commercial Street in Leith is currently being renewed. The whole width and length of the street is being redone rather than the odd token patch Cynicism aside this is a welcome move and the surface is much better.

    Just need them to keep heading east and do Seafield Road.

    Don’t think this has been mentioned on CCE before. Work apparently started last October.

    How’s it going on the ground?

    The Council is to begin work on a new active travel route between Pennywell Road roundabout and Gypsy Brae along Marine Drive and West Shore Road on Monday.

    Lots of work going on a few weeks ago with kerb lines going in. The only access was on the narrow pavement for the majority of it.

    I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TRO or RSO for it but that never seems to stop development-related works. Perhaps CEC is missing a trick by not getting developers to build other cycle projects.

    Thanks, interesting.

    The “Waterfront” seems to be a special CEC project all of its own. It’s possible all sorts of permissions have been given (or assumed to have been…) sometime in last 20 years(?)

    Well yes. Part of problems with planning process and/or the way CEC’s planning dept deals with it?

    And of course the ‘difficult’ issue of planning gain which decides who pays for all sorts of new infrastructure (not just for walking/cycling).

    Obviously, it’s good that it’s happening.

    Useful link to the Silverknowes/Cramond Prom but 2 main Questions -

    1) is it part of a well thought out strategic plan?

    2) what does it connect to at the southern end? (And why does the unnecessary Pennywell Road dual carriageway still exist?!)

    Looking through link above I realise that Pennywell Road is the subject of North Edinburgh Active Travel (NEAT).

    Don’t think it’s ever been mentioned on CCE.

    I’ve been aware of NEAT since some time last year when I despaired at discovering yet another large/detailed/expensive/etc consultation/project full of good work/community involvement/identification of problems/ideas/etc

    Possibly the most interesting thing in the Waterfront document is -

    Project Constraints:

    • Delivery of project by Development Project Team who do not
    hold capital budget.

    • Council Priorities in terms of Active Travel infrastructure.

    • Significant housing development on adjacent site.

    Every single time I cycle Myreside Road I think, "I should lodge a road surface complaint with the council", and by the time I get home I forget.

    ...and now apparantly a job has been created with the maintenance team to "resolve the issue".

    (I just plonked the pin near the north end of the road and mentioned a road surface dangerous for cyclists)

    Will be interesting to see what comes of this if anything.

    You could spend all day reporting problems, but I did cover off one other bugbear of mine of mine which is the horrible rippled surface southbound on Braid Av just north of the South Sub. That was rejected as "not being a critical safety defect".

    Is the council being... optimistic here? There's an active travel scheme on on Greendykes Road (apparently), anyone got pics? How far can you cycle along these London Road segregated lanes?

    Good work @cb on Myreside Road, which is getting ridiculous again. Heading north on that road is the line of deteriorating infill from an excavation that occupies the exact position in the road I'd like to be riding. I've now taken to riding in primary along there, ready to explain cheerfully but forcefully to the expected 'ahm a cyclist maself' person why I'm not in the gutter.

    That bit is so bad it's almost humorous. I do agree that it's not safety critical, but it's bloomin' annoying, particularly if you have a passenger on the bike who can't get their weight off their sit bones to avoid being joggled uncomfortably...

    Some nice shiny new tarmac finally between Trotter’s Bridge at the Gore Glen up to Carrington ,but the stretch on the Povert Road between the A7 and the low bridge at Kirkhill leading to the glen is untouched. The potholes have now evolved into deep craters probably supporting eco systems that have preservation orders on them.
    Worth every penny of my £80 a week council tax to the wonderful Midlothian council

    Nice new smooth tarmac on the hardpack section of path through Gyle Park. Goes from the entrance to David Lloyd, diagonally across to the west side which leads to the A8 crossing at Dechmont Rd.
    Not sure if this is on Quiet Route 9 which seems to follow the southern edge of the park by the railway line. That section can be lethal with black ice in winter btw.

    OMG they actually resurfaced Gray's Loan. No more bunny hopping or having to cycle in uber-primary down the 30cm wide vaguely smooth bit.

    West Granton Road

    Carriageway resurfacing between Penywell Road and Edinburgh College, starts Mon 22 April for about 6 weeks.

    Lane closures, temporary traffic and some bus stop closures as signed on-street.
