Playing tig with three kids whilst pushing a bike and wearing clippy shoes is harder than you might think.

My new (second-hand from the Bike Station) rear mudguard has been problematic ever since I fitted it a few weeks ago. Anyway this morning around around the Heriot Watt turnoff it snapped in ~half between the top fixture and the rear support rods and started rubbing the tyre.

I stopped to unbolt the floppy part but turned out I couldn't really move one of the bolts (with it nuts) with my dinky multi-tools. Luckily a few minutes later another daily commuter was passing by and asked if I required any help. I did. He had some more multi-tools and also more muscles, so eventually we managed to get it all out. I ditched the bit of the mudguard to the side of the towpath and I am going to pick it up on the way home. I thanked the kind cyclist, texted my manager that I was going to be late and we parted our ways.

At this stage I was all wet and cold. Now having not much of the rear mudguard left I could feel how my bahookie was getting wetter and wetter with every puddle. I really wished I had kept some spare undies in the office. I chose not to go commando around the office so I am walking around with an extra jumper tied up around my waist while the things are drying up.

On the plus side I made it to work on time thanks to the tailwind.

That's my Top least favourite commute of the year 2019 and Top 3rd least favourite commute ever.

    @bill

Shoddy merchandise from the Bike Station but excellent CCE content.

  5. Always bring a spare pair of underwear @bill!!!

Good that you got help and good that you got the tailwind.

Unlike you, I'm hoping the wind remains until home time as I had to slog my way against it this morning!

@IWRATS cheers. The mudguards (all metal) looked pretty decent and sturdy when I got them and fitted them. They were rather noisy when I actually cycled and I had to tighten the bolts regularly and made some adjustments. But then when I really tightened everything up the mudguard body started to break.

Haha Yes. That sounds like a very good idea :D

I am afraid you are not going to like the forecast... ;D

Wind dropped fir home time but still a little behind us for those heading west.

I had three waterproof garments on top trews and galoshes so not too bad getting there. Shorts on way home

Last night, I connected my wee rechargeable rear light to my computer's USB to charge overnight. This morning, in a bit of a dwam, I spent several minutes on the computer trying to find the option to 'safely eject' it before disconnecting it.

Sadly you are (one is work mobile, one mine - I don't cross those streams) - though now I want to fit a rotary dial phone to the front of the Surly...

Thanks to an oncoming rider overtaking when they shouldn't, I was forced off-piste, found some surprisingly deep mud, and only just kept it upright with the aid of fast reactions and harsh language. My already-rubbish mudguard, I discovered later, was at an ineffective jaunty angle so now everything is Brown.

As I knew I would be replacing it soon, I haven't checked my back tyre for intrusions for a couple of weeks, resulting in this near-miss:

My apologies to @Kaputnik for not keeping pace and chatting while our commutes converged tonight.

I have an awfully convoluted arrangement to deliver the kids at various social events on a Wednesday night which are just about manageable had I left the office 10minutes earlier.

To make matters worse, in the couple of hundred yards I was tailgating him, he managed to diagnose several things wrong with my bike purely from the rattles...

And my attempt to blast away into the distance only came to a 20metres advantage after a mile of frantic pedalling from me...

The good news that I made the drop off arrangements just about on time and are having a rest before then pick up fun starts...

I left the office tonight with the wrong glasses. It turns out I forgot to leave my spectacles at home this morning.

Decided chest cold had receded enough to cycle to work this morning. Arrived at meeting down Calton Road way in a wheezy raffle. Set pride aside afterwards and accepted offer from colleagues to stick the bike & self in the black taxi with them rather than coughing my way up through the Park to Newington.

I think Tuesday may be a Working From Home day. (Must look out the fleecy pjs, aka RelaxoSlacks. Sadly not suitable office attire.)

With gorgeous sunrises like for the past two days I again wish my commute was in the opposite direction and didn't have to keep turning my head around just to see it.

I travelled by train from Dunbar to Haymarket on the early morning Glasgow Express, retrieved my bike from the racks, cycled to Saughton House, started to lock bike and ... no pannier.

    Rule 2.

Back on bike furiously pedalling until I got Balerno tram stop when I came to my senses and tied up, jumped on a tram and continued my journey back to Haymarket.

Fortunately the chap who sells Big Issue by the bike racks spotted my pannier and handed it in to customer services. After getting it back I duly bought a BI from him. I offered a reward but all he wanted was to sell me a magazine. Fair enough.

Tram back to Balerno, bike back to work. So much for the early start!

I know we moan a lot about endless consultations, but I think it would've been nice if the council had even just announced that the tram was being extended to Balerno.
