Woke up to a very heavy rain at 6am this morning. Taking the car briefly crossed my mind but then I told myself "it is what it is and get on with that". Mr Bill asked if I was taking the car but protecting my pride I replied: "What? of course not".

While waiting at the lights by Slateford Aqueduct a driver in the next lane rolled down the window and told me I was brave. I laughed. He laughed back and told me to take it easy.

We clearly have been spoiled with the nice weather in the past 2-3 months!

@chdot with this type of rain, the distance didn't really matter much :)

@gembo you should setup a waterfall/cascade down your garden and WoL.

@gembo, I have a roll of roof flashing. If I ever get round to the job I bought it for I will only need a few feet max so you are welcome to a good length of it if will serve your purpose.

Thanks @acsimpson, did not think would get response - is a small section more like the gap between the Back scullery and the sitooterie which was not an original feature.

I now have this and floor lamp for my gig from unhurt and wheels from @sheeptpoucher all in the last few minutes.

Doing well in my birthday week

Arrived home last night to the realisation I'd left my helmet on my desk. An hour of cycling and I hadn't noticed. Not sure what went wrong with the usual routine to result in this outcome. Maybe it's the start something.

When I did my first 'proper' bike tour, in 2008, I knew I would be puttering around little country roads up north for the most part, so I left my helmet at home and didn't miss it. When I did a bigger tour the year after, and knowing I would be riding a canal trail for the most part but in otherwise unknown territory, I took my helmet just in case. It stayed in the bottom of my pannier for a week, and was then repurposed as an armoured basket for carrying bananas.

The only times I've worn one since are for occasional circuit racing, and the speed record training in 2017 (which was all five-point-harness-and-radio stuff), and maybe when the snow and ice is bad.

Colleague: "You look different today. You look like a normal person"
    Me: "What do you mean?"
Colleague: "You don't look like a cyclist"

(I am wearing a bit different clothes that I would normally carry in to work. The shoes are also different to the ones I keep at work)

You should have started stage-moaning about waiting ages at traffic lights and not finding anywhere to park and your leg muscles being really out of shape and petrol costing too much so that you sound like a 'normal' non-cycling person/motor car driver too.

Yesterday I headed out to the office for the afternoon. Shortly before 5pm our site manager comes to me and says "I have bad news for you. Your shoe is wet. There was a leak from a pipe and one of your shoes was placed right where it dripped". That wasn't an information I wanted to hear shortly before heading into 0 deg outside. I store my cycling clothes in the plant room as we don't have any other suitable facility.
I went with him to the plant room and he explainde that it looks like the gas valve got turned off during the day. That's why the heating was off in the afternoon and one of the pipes then had a little leak.

Then I remember that while walking into the plan room I was in a bit of a rush and my cycling clothes got caught into something and I pulled it. So turned out I turned off the gas the whole building.

Most people got slightly chilly during the afternoon but I got my shoe wet, so still I had to pay for it the most.

(I managed to dry the shoe a little with paper towels and then chucking it in a tumble dryer until I was about to leave. With the snow squalls along the way I had other things to worry about so didn't really notice the wet shoe)

    @bill excellent confession

No need for the HMs as you had the wet shoe. Oh wait, you didn’t notice it ok 5;HMs oh wait you cycled home in a blizzard. Slate is clean.

When using pipes to dry shoes I like to prop the shoe above the pipe.

Ethically bill will have informed The Management.

Sometimes best to wait a little until coming clean. E.g. if someone else getting the blame.

@gembo haha! They know it was me (I said 'i think it was me' even thought I knew it was me) but they also know I got punished. Glad no HM required.

@IWARTS LOL, I hope they will keep letting me use the plant room.

same - got to West End, pondered turning back for waterproof, decided not as "no way this is more than a small shower".

30mins later spent 15mins drying shorts and t-shirt under hand-dryer in office.

Somewhat unexpected and quite heavy bit of rain with very narrow E-W spread hanging over Ed ‘cos there was no wind.

I have a feeling that my pseudo commuting will be challenged this winter. This year I am far more challenged by badly placed meetings than last year. That means a greater necessity to go out in the early morning or evening, with little leeway. Last year I had more flexibility. So this morning I'm all dressed up, even with waterproof on - chucks it down as soon as I step out the door - so has hot shower instead and early start to work. With real commuting, there is less choice ...

Perhaps I may drift back to the office .... or get the turbo out ... or ....

@amir - WFH definitely a double edged sword consistency wise, I know what you mean. Anytime I’ve gone to the office though it’s more hassle than it’s worth at my place (booking desks, one way systems, paying for coffee etc). Don’t miss the route (straight across city centre from Midlothian to Crewe Toll) but did like the enforced consistency.

My route home from the office east west through City Centre is all road blocks just now. The bike gets through. Not so bad on the way in I tend to max the segregated .infra. The meadows, the 50metres at Tills , down behind the cop shop and up through moray house. Takes longer but is good.

Winter you want lunch time commutes if possible from your desk at home? There is a fab one for me before the ice round Clubbiedean takes less than an hour.

Yesterday I stopped and put on waterproofs but then it did not develop into the full rain. You win some you lose some
