if only there something that helped people not have to drive down it. something like a parking lot where people could leave their cars and just catch a bus ... or a tram....

You can see in the picture just how much that one cyclist is holding up the traffic, with all the road space he's taking up that should be reserved for the tax paying motorist etc....

Hilarious that EEN commenters are blaming the bus lanes for this. Hmmm, how come then that the M6 motorway in Brum is the most congested? Edinburgh bypass dual carriageway is 6th most congested?

Will the tram make a difference?

Also note all the motor vehicles in the photo are carrying just the driver. Very efficient use of space there.

"Will the tram make a difference?"

    Yes.

    Will anyone notice? Probably not.

IF half the current users switch, the 'free space' will fill up with different people, especially when -

    "

we have only in recent days, concluded a £500m deal which will see the remaining 10km of the key route between Glasgow and Edinburgh upgaded to full motorway standard.

“When finished, this will reduce journey times along the M8 by around 20 minutes in peak periods, improve road safety, free up more road space,

    "

    .......!!!!

    Quote continues -

    "

and the road infrastructure developed to support sustainable transport initiatives.”

    "

    OK. Where? Alongside the M8??

OBVIOUSLY the solution is to remove the narrow bit of Corstorphine Road - where the shops and high-density tenement flats are.

However the simplest solution for the council is to lift the bus lanes "on a trial basis". Easy to implement and it's free. This of course means that cars will then be able to weave in and out as they undertake and overtake as cyclist lose the space that the greenways afford them.
The real way to fix it is going to require actual town planners and a drive to cut the number of people who actually drive but that's never going to happen so I guess you could start by banning on street parking on the A8 where parking bays aren't provided and perhaps bus stops and traffic lights could be moved to better locations.

...while drivers on the A720 can expect to face delays at 10.27am...

    Really?

Is there one tractor that goes down the bypass every day at 10.27am or something?

I live near St John's Road and our house vibrates during rush hour due to the backed-up buses and other traffic. It's nothing to do with bus lanes and purely down to the narrowing around the shops. It's a bottleneck that can't be fixed other than by cutting down the volume of traffic passing through. Stopping right-turns from SJR up Clermiston Road could marginally improve things but will only push the jams further along the road.

Outside of rush hour any congestion (westbound at least) is usually caused by a car or van parked outside the shops at the junction with Clermiston Road (the row with Boots and the florist), meaning that that straight-ahead traffic has to wait behind right-turning vehicles. Making this a no-parking area would improve traffic flow slightly but to the cost of those shops.

    From the EEN article
"AA spokesman Luke Bosdet said: “The gridlock is down to the failure of the authorities to improve the flow of traffic."

The gridlock is actually down to the failure of motorists to share cars or get buses or cycle. I often get the bus at SJR just before Drumbrae roundabout. Whilst waiting for my bus,car after car passes with only a single occupant.
