Last night I was cycling home along the canal path in the gloaming. I didn't have my full night light on and the ground was getting darker. As I came to the cobbles under the bridge that links to the Water of Leith and the path to Colinton, I noticed a shape on the cobbles. This turned out to be a plank of wood deliberately placed to catch a cyclist. Had I not slowed down to save the wheels on the cobbles, I'd have hit it with non-hilarious consequences. Strangely I'd passed a couple of cyclists going out of town back at the railway bridge. Perhaps they'd joined from the Water of Leith but they neither mentioned it nor moved it. Could have been that it was placed just before I came along.

I kicked it away and then, when I spotted a man taking a survey on the new lights, I passed on the info to him. Probably it was a plank left from the work on the lights. He said he'd let a colleague know. It was still there this morning where I'd kicked it so I threw it in the bushes.

Hopefully this is not to be a regular occurrence but I'll phone the police next time if it happens.

Nice work. I had the front light on pulsar rather than super nova last night as well and I was wondering if I'd spot an obstacle or not.

I asked the workies on the towpath if they were laying land mines this morning, and one of them confirmed with a cheery smile that they were indeed.
