Just received the latest email from Planet X and they say they are opening a shop in Edinburgh - no further details, email says to watch FB for info.

Taking over the Tri Centre, according to the rumour mill in my neck of the woods...

They have a few Planet X bikes in the Tri Centre windows which kinda suggests they are taking over.

Handy, if I can get some spare swapoutdropouts without having to pay postage and risk YoDel...

That's what the picture on their email looked like but didn't want to speculate.

They 'like' the Tri Centre on Facebook.

Obviously in a Victor Kiam kind of way!

Yep They've bought the tri-centre's business.
Will be (mostly) the same staff and same services. Guess it made sense for the guys that owned it. Looking forward to seeing what kit they've got!

Hmm. Does that mean that the Tri Centre will no longer be a triathlon store? And will only stock Planet X kit? If so, disappointing news.

I timed my trip to the Tri Centre really well, then. No answer on the phone on Sunday, so thought I'd pop up anyway to drop my bike off. "Closed for refurbishment". Popped down again...

I have a couple of Planet X bikes and like them well enough. I'm not sure what the theory is behind bricks and mortar stores though - how can you claim to cut out the middleman if you become the middleman?

I guess we can now size up at the Planet X shop then order open mould stuff from eBay? ;-)

Lovely pink TT bike in the window just now. Currently "closed for refurbishment, opening soon."

The tri centre has been sponsoring Edinburgh Triathletes events at new year and the Gallant tri. Will be a shame to lose this indy store with local links.

Went past it this morning. It looks very smart.

I'll pop in when I'm not late for work......

    I went in on Saturday.

It's entirely Planet-X bikes (Goodbye to Trek and Ridley), and Planet-X and On-One branded clothing upstairs. Didn't see what was downstairs.

Look on the bright side; at least with a physical shop rather than their web store, you won't spend ages misled by low prices that turn out to be something that isn't in stock (all in-stock options costing the RRP)... or will you?

I've been in and got some bargains already. Sure I'm not the biggest fan of the bikes but in general it's still the same good staff (plus some solid additions) and some cool kit and servicing. They will soon have bike fitting up and running again and also coaching/training plans from a lad called Doug who is very capable.

The issue is that it's almost impossible to actually make money with high end stuff anymore without the backing of a large scale buyer. There is only so far you can go with a loyal customer base and sponsoring local events. (they basically supported the entire CX season by getting sponsorship from Ridley etc)
