    Hi all,

    I was wondering could you help me. I am a student at Edinburgh Napier University and currently studying for a Masters in Environmental Sustainability and working on my dissertation at the minute.

    As part of my dissertation on "An Assessment into the Sustainability of Edinburgh's Transport Strategy", I need to carry out 500 public surveys. Would it be possible for you to do my survey and help me reach this target? The survey can be found on the following link;

    https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/H75J9Q5

    The survey will only take a few minutes of your time, with 8 tick the box type questions and 2 comment questions.

    Due to the limited time I have to complete this dissertation I have made a deadline for the surveys to be completed by 1st April.

    I would really appreciate if you could spare a few minutes of your time to do the survey and thank you in advance.

    Clare

    Done.

    And, unusually for a survey like this that appears on CCE, nobody's aggressively critiqued it yet. In fact, I thought it was a good survey: the questions were clear and the answer options sensible. The only one I had any doubt about was the question about the tram, because that might one might encourage very long answers that would have been impossible to analyse.

    Erm. I'd done it a while ago and can't remember all my critiques at the time, but on the first screen, it says 'which mode of travel are you MOST likely to use' and then says 'tick all that apply'....

    Q 6 needs a 'not applicable'

    Surely the don't knows in Q10 ought to be the right most column?

    In sum, it could be worse, but it suggests that not much training was given in basic survey design AND that it wasn't piloted first.

    @SRD - OK fair points, but it was definitely better than some we've seen!

    @SRD I had the same thoughts.
    Re the tram question, perhaps Clare is intending to do some qualitative as well as quantitative analysis. A good mine of quotes for analysis section, perhaps...

    Clare,

    I'm sorry to have to say that is not a good survey. I started in good faith, but when I came to the question;

    'Are you aware of climate change, and the effects transport has on global warming?'

    I stopped. That's the definition of a leading question (and confuses 'climate change' with 'global warming'). What do I tick if I'm aware of climate change but unaware of transport's effects on it? What do I tick if I'm aware of the notion of climate change (do you mean anthropogenic climate change or just the Milankovitch cycles?) but believe that 'transport' has no effect on it?

    And question 4 presupposes that 'transport' damages the environment.

    If your lecturers are any good, they will make the same critique of your survey. If I were you I'd read a bit about survey design and the terminology of climate change ('global warming' went out of vogue in the eighties) and start again.

    Hope this helps get you good survey results and a good degree.

    Done - I agree with Greenroofer that we have seen surveys that were far poorer. It could be improved along the lines suggested by IWRATS and SRD.

    My main comment is that it seems an odd study to undertake, given that a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Local Transport Strategy has already been undertaken for the Council by Halcrow, as required by legislation. You can find it at:

    Done. My only critique is that some of the questions don't have enough options, e.g. on Q5 I had to choose between rating public transport accessibility as Good or Poor, when actually I think it's just OK.

    Good luck with the dissertation!

    Seemed alright to me and better than several we have done. Good to see IWRATS and instography disagreeing with himself. :-)

    Thanks to all for doing my survey, really appreciate it. Still plenty of time to do it if you haven't done so already. Was surprised to see so many done in 24 hours. Thanks also for your comments, I will take them onboard and hopefully learn from then which I'm sure will help improve my survey writing skills in the future.

    Clare, as I understand the monkey, you get a big spike initially then it tails off and you can create a mini spike before the deadline by chivvying people to complete it.
