Due to their inherently mobile nature, smartphones are often used while moving. This is fine for voice calls, but could be problematic for operations that demand visual attention like reading or writing text messages. Aside from appearing antisocial, texting could potentially cause bodily harm if a user operates their device while walking.

Meh, there was an android app doing the same thing a few years ago. It made me queezy...
Back in the days of a nice old-fashioned hardware T9 keypads it was perfectly possible to write text whilst not looking at the phone, devoting all available visual inputs to safe pedestrianism.
Or, I don't know, you could just stop for a moment to text?

I'd disagree with this. Punters talking on their phones while walking are *way* more likely to be unaware of their surroundings than those not. I've seen loads of callers stepping out into traffic, walking directly into other peds' paths.
