Somehow number 4 son and I managed to get a Happy Birthday Mum card…

Morrisons had a limited selection and we had picked the least cheesy mum card on display.

She laughed at us. A lot. I think we've been thrown clear.

Slightly concerned that those capes could catch in the back wheel leading to an Isadora Duncan type catastrophe?

Likewise, we had a greeting card fail today.

Our littlest manage to present a 'like a mother to me' card to her actual mother.

Given she is only 2, I'm getting the blame for it...

I didn't know such cards even existed - until now.

Anyone who has seen The Incredibles knows that capes are a bad idea.

Think I might have benefitted from a double bluff. I am not well but still orchestrating the Mother's Day action for my partner despite kids being 16, 13 and 9. The two youngest did make handmade things. Anyway the card which was a photo of a mallard and ducklings was deemed lovely, I think because my partner thought the kids had picked it themselves.

Always have a nagging doubt about schools doing Mother's Day craft given the number of weans in schools without mothers.

Love that my partner claims Motheirng Sunday is an official religious observation, whereas Fathers' Day is just made up

The partner is true. Mothering Sunday (you are meant to return to your mother church, and as servants would have very little chance to get away from their employment, this was a day for the family, so the connection with honouring your mother came about). Mother's Day is an early 20th century American invention Mother's Day as is Father's Day

Which is why I as a dutiful daughter to my mother (daughter of a CofE vicar) have to scour the shops looking for one of the few remaining Mothering Sunday cards to send.

Yes Mothering Sunday made up by the bible industry way before the card industry made up Father's Day - just my view as atheist. The partner is daughter of Methodist reverend, so never any dispute that she was right, just in my view a time lag between one thing being made up and another. The partner don't do no scouring though.

    Indeed :)
My feeling is if the purpose of the invention of the event is to generate sales for the card, chocolate and flower industries, a plague on them; things that have / had social benefits I am prepared to tolerate though.

Yes Mothering Sunday shades Mother's Day easily. The partner also had hard job persuading her teaching colleagues that they could tick the RE box on their plans if they called it Mothering Sunday rather than Mother's Day. She was not believed but convinced the heathens.

Wasn't Mother's Day in Durban (in SA - not Dunbar). So daughter forgot leaving me to get a card and flowering thing on her behalf.

My (American) other half has to remember to send a card to his mother on American Mother's day, having first remembered to buy one on (UK) Mothering Sunday, which is quite a palaver.
