Hello. My name's Pedro and I just wanted to say hiya. I had a looksee but couldn't find an intro thread. I'm not sure of the footfall/traffic here but I thought I'd sign up anyway. :)

I was also just wondering if there are any group rides around the Edinburgh area for folding bikes only... I've seen some folding bike runs advertised down south and it got me thinking... perhaps there's one during the Edinburgh Cycling Festival?

    Anyway, Hiya!

Bromptonites was the first Brompton Meetup Group formed for folding bike users in Edinburgh and is just about to celebrate its 4th Birthday, on 13th May.

There is the long established Origami run group, based around Birmingham and started by the late John Pinkerton, with Mike Hessey and IIRC Tony Hadland.

There is an East Coast US meetup group and a London group, plus some mad b&&&&rs in Yorkshire, who do the odd crazy thing or two, and write about it on Brompton Talk.

Strictly speaking, Bromptonites was formed by an Edinburgh-Glasgow partnership—but over the last four years has spread its geography pretty widely.

There also used to be the Brompton or other folders race round the grassmarket in business suits? Is that happening again. Good fun.

What is it about bromptonites that encourages group meetings? Does this happen with other brands of folders? Do bromptonites allow non-brompton's in their midst

    "Is that happening again"

Probably not the Bromptons kept winning.

    Was part of Nocturne series.

Was there more than one Nocturne in Edinburgh? The commuter race was fun although descending into the Grassmarket on small wheels was a little scary.

This is a Bromptonite photo at the back of Braehead and you can just see the back end of a Dahon sticking out.

Wonder if Laid Back could be tempted into entering the folding tandem recumbent in aforementioned folding bike race...

It's in a category of its own.... ;-)

Should win then? At least within its own category?

Yes. Will sponsor the folding recumbent tandem race and should win with ease!

Thanks for the replies folks. I think I might just turn up to the Bromptonites meeting on my Mezzo. I mean, even if they turn me away it'll just make me look even more like a bike rebel! :P

Does anyone here have a Mezzo? What do you think of them? I've only had mine for a couple of days but I really like it so far...

I'll have a Tern folder as soon as the Cycle To Work voucher arrives; seemed to provide the most bike for the money if you don't need the minimum folded size that the Brompton gives you.

I do quite like the look of the Mezzo, but I have only seen a handful in real life. One or two in London and I think I've seen one in Edinburgh; that was a while ago. Even rarer than Birdys!

Seem to recall the review in AtoB was pretty favourable. I think the original models were rather under geared but I believe they have sorted that now. Which one do you have?

How does the front wheel fold work in practice? Does the front remain attached to the folded package?

I've got a D9 (2011 model) with the straight cross bar. The folding of the bike is easy and once the handlebars are in place it almost unfolds itself! The front wheel flips out of the fork and sits against the rear (which is flipped under the bike). When undfolding it locks in to the fork with a solid clunk and I've had no issues with it... yet! There is a little play in the handlebars but I'm not sure if that's wear and tear or a design flaw. When I get paid I'm going to put the thing in for a full service as I haven't a clue about folders. Anyone recommend a good shop for this sort of bike?

    Just curious - What's a PY?

PS: Darkerside, please share your thoughts/pics when you get your Tern. They look really nice but a little expensive for the really tasty ones. :)

Pedro - if you got your bike from a shop I'd take it back there, but (given that you are asking) I'm assuming you didn't.

BikeTrax are the local Brompton specialists (that's where I got mine). They do have other folders than Bromptons but I don't think they sell Mezzos. They've always been very helpful when I've gone in.

Alternatively you could locate your nearest bike repairer & see what they can do for you...

Folding PY was actually at the Zazou canal boat cafe. I recall trying Brompton, mezzo and Birdy. I thought mezzo best for riding (on short spin on towpath) and Brompton best for folding. Birdy nice too of course.

Has someone told the Bromptonites about Pedal on Parliament?

That phrase sounds like it could have been uttered during the English Civil War.

(Maybe just my sense of humour)

I've found Biketrax rather snooty about my dahon when I've gone there. Perhaps unintentional on their part or unfair on mine, but that's the impression I was left with.

Can you tell I've seriously gone off Biketrax?

My Dahon Helios was at Zazou PY, but Uberuce was riding it.

It is now less snazzy than it was - Marathon plus tyres, rack and stand added. Still pretty light and (if anything) over-geared.

Ah yes, I think it was SRD's Dahon not a mezzo that got my no 1 for riding

I know chap in porty with a mezzo tho he is on bigger steed at the moment
