The EU has published a summary of statistics on road deaths. Cycling casualties have increased across the EU by 6% while for all road users there was a reduction of 11% from 2010 to 2012. "This is explained at least partly by an increased total number of cyclists on the roads. Among cyclists, the age factor is quite striking. While the number of young and children who die while biking decrease, the number of killed grown-up bicyclist is on the increase. Among those older than 50 years, the number of fatalities increased by alarming 10% from 2010-2012."

Is a 6% increase in cycling likely?
Don't suppose there will be accurate data on whether the older deaths are due to older people continuing to cycle for more years (compared with previously) or 'returners'.

It would be nice to see cycling only statistics. One of the disadvantages of the UK doing quite well overall (and Scotland has even better rates than UK as a whole), is that it is always used as a stick when asking for cycling provision.
"Why?" is the response, "we have the safest roads in Europe."

Yes that table of cyclists only would be helpful. UK second lowest fatalities with Sweden on similar number and very little change in either country. Roads therefore relatively safe for users in UK but what about the risk for cyclists please?
