"THE big screen had been due to show Margaret Thatcher’s funeral, but organisers pulled the plug amid fears it could become a focal point for protests."
Just as long as they don't slip her in the new foundations as some sort of voodoo curse.

“It ... can be turned on a gear so it can face more of the audience on Lothian Road.”
Isn't Lothian Road dangerous enough without the drivers watching telly?

It's not entirely clear but sounds like a plan to replace the existing screen with a massive digital billboard.

Joanna Mowat said: "We’ve had it for about four years and only Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win really saw crowds watching it."
Not quite true. There were some reasonable crowds, despite the rain, for Murray's non-wins in preceding years, too.

Have to say I'm with Cllr Mowat on this. Why do we need the darn thing? So advertisers can pump their wares into our subliminal awareness even more than they do already? Just get rid and have a public square with no advertising instead.

At the very least they could have the thing go on standby until someone switches it on.
It's always surreally bleak seeing the thing irradiating a deserted and windswept Festival Square in winter.

The more advertising space the council (& anyone else) provide, the lower the advertising rates become. Laws of supply and demand.
Therefore more advertising space is not necessarily going to net the council more money in total. All that will do is further degrade our beautiful city.
It's a race to the bottom, don't ya know?
Plus, I'm waiting for the first crash outside Lord John's '
Murrayfield' Gorgie at the massive video billboard.Posted 10 years ago # -
Yes, getting rid of it would be ideal. They can always hire one of those truck based TV's for Wimbledon if necessary.
