Some of you may know Caroline Barr who is a regular at Spokes meetings, she rides a specially adapted disabled trike, or she did until today when it was stolen.

This is the second time it has happened to her. Her first trike was stolen last year and her friends clubbed together to buy a new one, which has now been stolen from out side her house, where it was locked up.

If you do see this trike please report it to the police

Sad to learn of this happening again.

Perhaps her friends could club together for a bike locker?

These trikes must be quite niche to be sold on? Presume tricky to store as bulky and insurance therefore also tricky? Must be very frustrating and annoying for the woman.

Given the 'spotted' thread I would have thought that it would be impossible to use this trike in Edinburgh for more than a day or two without a pair of CCE eyes alighting on it.

I'll certainly be keeping a look-out. I've enjoyed seeing this lady in Newington for years.

Devasting for Caroline as she uses every day.

Joe Taylor at The Bicycle Works helped set it up and he'll be extremely hacked off (and not someone you want to mess with!).

She is well known in the area - a regular at the Queen's Hall coatroom.
Anyone at last weeks Spokes meeting will have heard her questioning the panel about how cycling needs to develop for all cyclists including trike users.

So more people than ever should be looking out.
Sad to say it's probably been ridden and dumped. Most people don't know how expensive something like this is. Market is small etc.
Reminds me of Andrea's tandem that was nicked and recovered minus any decent bits.

I suspect it was stolen to strip for the parts, but even so it is worth people keeping an eye out for it.

    Possible stopgap replacement

Well spotted. £135 is not much for this sort of thing. Could we 'crowdsource'?
(Average person spends at least £1200 a year in coffee shops btw!)

Would be ironic (sad) if that was her old one.... sure it was a Pashley.

I could chip in a tenner for that if we're passing the hat round

Thanks Sally. Your tenner is noted!

I'm in touch with people that looked after her trike at Bike Works and Cycle Service to see whether a basic trike would do her. Not sure if brakes were moved to one side - new one had nice bars too.
Maybe a long shot but could get and sort if we're not duplicating someone else's efforts.

    CYCLECHIC UPDATE:
Update: We have been told that a member of Caroline’s family has now offered to cover the cost of replacing Caroline’s trike so that she can once again enjoy the freedom of cycling.

There is a thread on YACF which mentions crowd sourcing for a new bike. Perhaps someone could liaise? Save two bikes being bought, of the same well meaning people bidding against each other for this bike?

I would post but I can't find it....

Good news on the woman getting another bike. I am just a bit worried it gets nicked again?

Yes, I assume she has nowhere secure & accessible to her to store it? I would guess that there's a fair bit of metal in one of those things, they could just be being nicked for the scrap value?

Now recovered. Somewhat mutilated. (pics on FB)

Good to hear of the return but not the mutilation.

What is needed to provide secure place for parking at Caroline's house? Option s could include 'breadbin' lockable on-street units (2 per parking bay capacity up to 10 bikes).

If she had a Motability car she'd automatically get free parking space for it - so half a parking space for parking the trike seems a fair deal, but for the dumb bureaucracy or rigged system to benefit car makers, that will pay for a car but not a cycle*, and bend over backwards to provide parking for a disabled person's car but not their cycle. (are CEC reading this?)

    * Couple in miners' cottages near Durham wanted to get Duet wheelchair bike, which could be parked in the back yard, but Motability refused and insisted only option was a car, that cost more to state, and to users, and which required rental of a garage, some distance from the house, as nowhere to park outside with limited options to stop and get disabled partner out and in to house, and then take car back to parking place.
