We went along to this today. Usual platitudes about mixed housing, pleasant environment, blah blah blah. No doubt it will end up the usual Cala development of identikit square white boxes, like the one on the Canal at Ratho.
The most interesting point though was that there are plans to "domesticate" Maybury Road.

I couldn't make the consultation unfortunately so I've not seen the latest plans. Assuming that like most consultations there's no real option for it not to go ahead :-( the thing which I would personally have liked added to the original plans were foot/cycle bridge(s) over Maybury Road. Was there any details of how they plan to domesticate it while maintaining traffic flow? Will It be similar to Drumbrae where the road is wide and has a nominal 30 limit but is still woefully unsuitable for most non vehicle use?

Press release from Residents' Association.
Interestingly, the developers have received an opinion from some consulting engineers saying that the 1000 extra cars expected from the development will have no effect on traffic.

That's what they are paid to say...

A THREAT of legal action by residents campaigning against hundreds of homes being built on their doorstep has forced the city to put a 20-year planning blueprint on ice. Cammo Residents Association claims the proposal for 600 houses would cause gridlock at the nearby Barnton junction.

I wonder what the capacity of the new 'Assisted Living' place (ex-Barnton Hotel) will be? Presumably not that many car owners will live there, but there will be staff and visitors.

In addition, the plans support housing development on two sites at Maybury and Cammo, despite a campaign by locals who are fighting to preserve the green belt status of Cammo Fields.

Ding ding. Round 2

Thanks for the heads up. I'll need to ensure I make it to one of those days. IIRC the eventual refusal was primarily due to it's prematurity and was more a wait until the LDP is published sort of response than an outright no.
I'm sure this one is going to be fought tooth and nail, even more so than the larger West Craig development simply because of the houses adjacent to the field.
As usual if it does get built the real battle is ensuring that the active travel links are correct. This means a combination of the following will be requried:
1) Bringing Maybury Road down to size. It's only fed by one lane at either end so should be one lane either way for the majority of it's length.
2) Putting houses on the "other" side risks having two isolated communities. Frequent crossing points are vital.
3) Assuming zebra crossings are too much to ask for then at junctions these might be light controlled but would need supplemented by at least one grade segregated crossing point linking the new development to East Craigs and therefore the northern end of East Craigs to Cammo Walk and therefore the active travel corridor in the LDP.Posted 6 years ago # -
So I went to the consultation on Friday evening and although I will miss the fields when they are built on I came away with a positive feeling after chatting with the consultants until closing time. Addressing my three points above:
1) The planed changes for Maybury road are extensive and include reducing the speed limit to 30mph and introducing at least 3 and possibly 4 sets of lights along the northern end of the road. There will be 2 entrances for motor vehicles which they hope will be all ways red to allow the pedestrian crossings on all arms to be green simultaneously. Although this sounds good unfortunately it is offset by plans to reopen the closed lane with justifying it by saying that it will allow a right turning lane for southbound traffic at the site entrances and between junctions it will allow the new bus stops to operate without offending traffic flow. Rather naively they seemed to think the reduced speed limits would stop people using the second lane for high speed overtakes.
2) They are planning to build one new access through the woods to East Craigs and will be designing, although arguing against, a second. This will allow the existing housing access to the new bus routes and onwards through the new houses to Cammo Estate.
3) There are no plans for grade segregation or crossings, although I left thinking that if the road is reduced to 30mph and the crossings are all single stage as per their suggestions it may not be too bad having them at grade, even though it will not be a nice to travel around as the existing east Craigs Paths.
The site has been sold and completely redesigned since the last rejected planning application. It now contains one main peripheral road with housing adopting a grid off this. There will be a large "park" on the flood plain to the west of the site and two more formal "linear" parks through the site, one from Barnton looking towards the Cammo hillock and one starting further up Maybury and looking towards Cammo Tower.
the north east corner will have a gateway hub including a bus terminus which they hope will be served by a new bus route or possibly an extension from a service currently terminating at the Gyle. They plan to work with Lothian Buses to have this in place before the first residents move in and may even be required to give all initial residents free bus travel for a year.

CALA HOMES PLANS FOR CAMMO

Not Cammo housing for once but Cammo Estate.
Yesterday, today and tomorrow they are consulting on the Cammo Estate Restoration Project.
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20064/parks_and_green_spaces/1608/cammo_estate_restoration_project
Basically nothing has been decided and depends on lottery funding which they now can't apply for until 2019. Likely to involve some wetland areas, restoration of the walled garden, possibly a cafe in the stable block and some play areas and of course a larger carpark but could involve much more too.
I was out of time when I asked about the project timescales but likely to be a slow burner over the next 5 years.

Oh, after reading the Picardy place thread I should mention the possibility of a pavilion at the end of the canal. a far more appropriate place for one than a traffic island.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Absolutely appalling - they are proposing a 134 space car park which can't be seen as acceptable. Coming on top of the increase in likely users due to the adjacent housing development I think the whole thing will be spoiled.
My feeling is that the estate is just nicely, naturally decayed. Do the bare minimum to make the ruins safe and provide some disabled access but just leave it in its "natural" state.
Perhaps I have a unique outlook but take the view that such places next to a built up area are there to visit and enjoy but this should not be encouraged by mass parking provision, cafes etc.
If people want to go then they can get there fairly easily by other means. If they can't be bothered with that then fine, don't go

“We feel this final proposal is well-judged, well-balanced and respects the location and the existing community and will bring long-term enhancements to this part of Edinburgh.”
He added the group had worked closely with local community groups in the Cammo estate to ease concerns over a lack of transport links.

Slide 55 of the presentation yesterday on cammo had an ATAP plan, with revised 5 year and longer term plans.
https://edinburgh.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/372416/tab/slides
tweet with slide on it - to save you downloading full slide deck
Some useful improvements to the Quiet Route network are shown but there is nothing (even in the longer term) showing segregated routes on main arterial roads.
Disappointing...

The slides show just how disastrous this is for active travel. slide 42 for instance illustrates the 4m wide shared use path:https://twitter.com/acsedinburgh/status/1131559276726673408
A mother a a child are walking on the path and it leaves barely enough room for one careful cyclist to pass. Perhaps it really will be easier to carry your bike as per slide 47.

It's unfortunate that this site is being built before the high quality routes to the Gyle are completed as bad habits are likely to form even for those working nearby. However I'm not sure that building the houses further out of town would be better for traffic conditions, I suspect it would be far worse as there would be fewer options to leave the car at home.
It's also a shame that nothing is being done as part of the development to improve active travel connections across Barnton Junction. Assuming you wait for the green man then you either have a choice between multi (3/4) full phases of the junction or waiting on a 60cm wide traffic island with 40mph traffic either side of you. Neither of which encourages people to walk.

"As we have cleared debris for sections of the burn edge unrecorded drains have been discovered, drains dating back to the site's previous use. These have now been incorporated into the management plan for the site"
The previous use being 6 months ago when crops were growing in the field.
