PUBLIC events have been banned on a busy city centre street for up to six months over concerns they were affecting local traders.

Cool, I'm sure drivers will be lobbying for the extra parking space, or taxi's will be lobbying for a rank there.

“There are people everywhere, and they take a lot of business away from us.

“That’s probably one of the biggest reasons why I am against it.”

I can well imagine that a shop owner paying city centre business rates will be put out by market traders pitching up and paying relatively little to pinch their trade.

Having said that. it would be good to reverse the 1960s ban on open street markets in Edinburgh city centre. A proper market too, not some festive thing seling tourist tat or a 'farmer's market' with overpriced foodstuffs. Maybe Market Street would be a good location?
