I had a weird cycle today

Could have put this in the good cycle today thread but it wasn't totally pleasant

Coming home the West of Edinburgh was gridlocked by a crash on the M8 and one in towards town. Traffic was practically at a standstill which lead to some lovely filtering in the sunshine, which put a smile on my face.

The only problem was the large number of cars trying to find alternative routes so the quiet back roads became rather unpleasant and I had a few cases of cars making abrupt and unexpected movements when a gap appeared.

Fun for a day but quite unnerving...

Reminds me a bit of the bit where the illegal cyclist in wilmington's cow's dystopic future run by jeremy clarkson evades the police...

(tried to find. can't get any of the links to work. newbies don't know what they're missing)

The fun bit was riding in the empty bus lane with the traffic in both outside lanes at a standstill and no buses/taxis chasing you along.

Knowing that your commuting time isn't affected by traffic is quite plus for cycling. Those in cars at the back of the queue (@ macro) would take a long long time to get even to Gogar. If they were heading further west they would be queuing all the way to Newbridge and the along the A89 to Livingston.

At least the sun was shining.

I could see the traffic queuing (from the Livingston direction) as the train I was on went through Uphall station, and then was aware that the queues were in the other direction when we got past the accident spot (I guessed it was an accident at that time).

Boyfriend was running a cycle skills thing and most of the attendees were late because they'd driven there and got stuck in the traffic. The exceptions were boyfriend and the one other person who arrived by bike. Boyfriend reported a similar trip along the Calder Road to yours, Hankchief.

Couple of my colleagues live through west and they reported journey times in hours, one person got home at 9!. I got home in normal time though I did have to walk for a bit and take the cut through past HMP Saughton.

The 35-year-old, from Livingston, exited a vehicle that stopped on the hard shoulder of the westbound carriageway at around 3.40pm before being involved in a collision with a Leyland DAF tanker truck.

Quoted simply to register the wording used by the press (or possibly the police if this is a verbatim repeat of the press-briefing) for a vehicle/ped incident.

Went up to pal’s house in the gloaming last. Night. 4.45pm still halflight.

Came back down around midnight was very dark and quiet. Spooked a deer just after thriepmuir. No traffic though some cats at top of balerno had headlights on - probably leaving the party they were at. And a car from the party i was at caught up with me when i was back in the village.
