Noticed that on the way to drop off the bamboo on Saturday. When I went back through on the way to the ride there was a police picking over it wearing blue glubs.
Wee boy on motorbike on the WoL on Sunday. Rang it in to the police, who asked if the rider was wearing a helmet. It sounded like if the crime of non-helmet wearing was not being perpetrated then the crimes of being too young to ride on the road versus riding on a not-road were uninteresting.

Of course it could be an unfortunate person in circumstances completely unrelated to the rest of this thread.

Maybe I'm missing something but I simply do not see the point of issuing a 6 month driving ban to people who 1) aren't allowed to drive anyway, and 2) don't give a monkeys whether they are 'allowed' to or not.

Last week I passed a couple of "terrorizing youth" coming the other way on a sports bike approaching the Craigleith junction.

They were going pretty slowly (slower than I cycle) and taking good care to avoid people.

While I'm hardly suggesting we should encourage this behaviour, I was struck afterwards by the fact that I was so much happier sharing the path with the "terrorizing youth" than with the upstanding local dog walkers.

    Perspective!

Your local friendly motorcyclists will be grateful if you could tell the police about youths on sports bikes. Just note the plate and call Crimestoppers. I have on occasion stopped to admire stolen bikes the better to get a description of the thieves, but that's possibly beyond the call of duty for non-motorcyclists.

Although if they are being driven relatively considerately (apart from the fact of being on a foot/cyclepath) then maybe they aren't stolen?

Well, it looked like the sort of bike that people with a bit of cash kill themselves on, rather than something two teens wearing hoodies with the drawstrings scrunched right up around their eyes could possibly afford. But I appreciate the faith in our common man ;-)

You can generally tell. No one would ride their own sports bike on a dedicated cycle path. Thieves often ride two-up without helmets (they don't wander around carrying helmets just in case they find a bike to nick). Again, no real biker would ever ride without a helmet.

If you call Crimestoppers with the plate they will know straightaway if it's stolen.

It was with great pride that I learned last night that Madame IWRATS had participated in the citizens' arrest of two motorcycle thieves in Stockbridge. She, like me, is a biker and has lost two bikes to theft and arson. For us this amounts not just to loss of property but almost to an assault on our person.

She was making her way home when she spotted a big Swiss registered BMW adventure bike being ridden through heavy traffic by hooded youths. She actually started running after them, pointing and shouting. This caused a couple of men to emerge from their cars. The youths panicked, banged the big bike off a few cars and stalled it. One of them was dragged off the bike and sat on by citizens. The other ran off only to be pursued and sat on by an off-duty policeman. Madame IWRATS stayed with the policeman's kids and called the boys in blue.

Neither thief was assaulted beyond being sat on, though Madame IWRATS confessed that it was very hard not to accidentally take a running kick at the head of the first one.

I hope the tourists' holiday in Scotland isn't ruined. In any case I'm very proud of the bravery and restraint shown by my fellow citizens.

IWRATS - fantastic! Always comforting to know that the vast majority of your fellow citizens are good people, who will do the right thing.

Thanks for that @Stickman. I've passed the link to Madame IWRARTS.

I'm delighted to learn that the alleged cretin has decided to plead not guilty. That should add 50% to whatever punishment he'd have got otherwise.

Not just a problem in Edinburgh.

    Poor wee dog.

It's bizarre that if you ride a quad bike off road and hit a dog you get a three year ban, considering the endless run of cases where people are convicted of culpability for the death of a cyclist and don't get banned at all.

    @Dave That is odd.

@IWRATS The description of the incident reminds me of this part of Marathon Man.

was going to post this in the bad driving thread but saw a quad bike get a mention above

saw 2 guys on a quad bike going up ardmillan terrace, they were driving all over the road and pretty fast with no helmets either so thought it might be stolen. almost defintely stolen as the guy driving was wearing a lone ranger type mask (unless he didn't want to get done for not wearing a helmet)!

I've got quite a few motorcycles being ridden on NEPN on my headcam. Wee bikes, massive sports bikes, blatting along at quite a lick, going pretty slow, a broad spectrum. Sometimes the riders conceal themselves and sometimes they are pretty blatant.

Based on my painful experience taking the police that film of the motorist who pulling out of a give way on his mobile, and then waved it under my nose while arguing with me, I don't bother to do anything with this footage.

Random example I may have posted before:

Hmm at least its only motorbikes - at the opening of a Path in Port Glasgow I was walking at the rear of the groups with the Director of Leis & Rec for the Council and we happened upon a gent in Barbour jacket with Jack Russell and a rifle in Lady Octavia Park. As there were 2 of us and both over 6 ft we stood our ground and sorted him out.

Less easy were the pair in fatigues and balaclavas, and rifle with telescopic sight, I happened to ride up to with the kids in tow (literally) on the NCN75 route at the delightfully hand gun free village (but obviously not rifle or shot gun free) of Blackridge. At a safe distance I called the Police.

Officers admit they cannot pursue stolen bikes amid concerns inexperienced riders could be seriously injured or killed trying to escape.

Is it just me that fails to feel much sympathy for criminals injuring themselves escaping from the law?

I quite often ride the leith to roseburn path at night I did wonder if motorbikes were allowed after one went past a bit quick, just asumed some youthful exuberance.
