Two dirt-bikes passed me this evening on the Pinkhill path. One rider had lights but no helmet, the other had helmet but no lights. New Christmas presents being tested out?

As a motorbicyclist I do feel an obligation to call in every stolen bike I see. The last time I did this, the police's main concern was to explain to me I couldn't be absolutely certain the road bike ridden down Gilmerton Road by three hoodie wearing fourteen year olds actually was stolen.

There were three children riding unplated dirt bikes too big for them too quickly and very noisily around Newhailes yesterday, but as they had helmets on I didn't waste my time telling the police, who only seem concerned about misuse of motorbikes when no helmets are involved.

Children as young as 12 have been caught stealing motorbikes and terrorising locals, with Police Scotland’s helicopter brought in for days at a time to try to combat the problem.

Officers said the chopper was responsible for a 90 per cent fall in the number of juvenile motorbike thefts reported to police while it was in action over the north of Edinburgh.

But in June, the force’s Chief Constable Sir Stephen House admitted thieves can snatch cars and motorcycles without fear of pursuit by the police – due to concerns chasing suspects could cause a road accident.

We were down at Silverknowes on Tuesday (i.e. not the day of the incident chdot links to) and were commenting that there was a lot of police activity - I think we saw at least two cars going about - and one of the group was saying that he thought youths on motorbikes were likely to be the reason.

I'm going to sound callous but there is a certain inevitability to this.

My views on bike thieves are well known. I want to see a world without bike thieves. (I'll go out on a limb and speculate that these children did not have permission to ride the bike.)

What I do want to see is a system which allows the state to take these children into care permanantly before they get to this stage and protects them from abuse once that's done. This means a massive amount of money moved to children's services and a massive increase in state intrusion, but if we don't protect our fellow citizens when they are at their most vulnerable this is the inevitable result. We shouldn't be ashamed or embarassed about looking after our young people (or staking failed adults out for the ravens).

Laissez-faire neo-Darwinian market economics isn't a model for producing citizens. Vive la republique.

POLICE have charged six men between 16 and 47 in a crackdown on motorbike theft in north Edinburgh.

These arrests took place between Wednesday and Thursday, as part of a day of action for Operation Soteria. All six men were reported to the procurator fiscal.

One man has subsequently pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to eight months in prison. Between June and September, police say they have arrested 27 people for 129 theft and anti-social behaviour motorbike related offences.

I came across someone parking "their" motorbike in the bushes off the Blackhall Path last week. It was subsequently recovered by the Police. I hope it gets reunited with the owner.

Just read that Muirhouse story. Absolutely outrageous that they are just being allowed to get away with terrorising people. What is the point in having a police force? They can mobilise masses of officers when a few thousand of us want to ride peacefully to parliament but they can't get it together to deactivate a few scumbags?

    "deactivate"

Problem here is not actually the police.

They catch some of the people (more than once).

Apart from 'parents', 'society' etc., 'the system' is currently unable to provide suitable deterrents or sanctions or alternates etc.

(Not that I am suggesting any solutions.)

http://ruts.org.uk started as an Edinburgh project and may (or may not) be suitable for some of those involved here.

Things like this used to be 'an answer' -

    http://www.scotsman.com/news/emotional-end-for-airborne-offenders-project-1-541042

Then someone thought it was a good idea to make a TV programme about it.

This was followed by an 'outcry' from opportunistic politicians and tabloids.

That was kind of my point (badly made). What is the point of a police force that can't do anything? Ah well, seems the SG agrees since they keep cutting them back.

Happy New Year From Police Scotland - 'You're Nicked'

First Arrest and Confiscation of the Year as Police Act Early - Bike Summit Planned

This is a shorter bulletin than usual, but we couldn't let this great news go unrecorded. Our campaign to tackle illegal and dangerous motor biking in the park has had the best possible boost at the start of the year. One biker has already been arrested and his bike confiscated. Investigations are continuing with regard to two other bikers filmed in the park and of course the case of the 6/7 year old child biking there has been reported too.

Big thanks are due to Police Scotland for this excellent start to 2017, and local councillor Keith Robson is arranging a 'Bikes Summit' with the police to help take the campaign forward. We're determined to make sure that action continues to discourage illegal and dangerous motorbiking in your park. We will report further in future newsletters. Nice to start the year on such a positive note.

One would like to hope that the confiscated bike will find its way back to the rightful owner.

Think this is confiscating a motorbike - probably from owner.

There'd be more chance of a lottery win than the bike not being stolen,
