Flagged down a gentleman riding a dirt bike quite quickly round Craigmillar Hill yesterday. We couldn't quite see eye to eye on his activities and he went his way.

Called in a young twerp riding a stolen KTM down Gilmerton Road to the police this afternoon.

It's the nice weather I suppose.

After PoP on Saturday Tulyar and I were at the bottom of Chambers Street and watched a red Triumph Tiger being ridden in a manner inconsistent with that one would expect of the owner.

The police were busy attending something else on GeoIV Bridge (ambulance, etc), and the loudly and hastily U-turning motorbike rider hadn't gone unnoticed by them.

IWRATS, was it a big white KTM with orange crash bars? I saw one on Nicolson St a couple of times on Sat afternoon being ridden rather aggressively. It was in the company of another bike whose make I forget.

    @Arellcat

Orange and white with a top box. Wasn't quite sure it was stolen until the guy wheelied it. Going too fast to get the plate. I'll have a look for the bits of it on the hill shortly.

I think that KTM is the one I saw coming off the Loanhead cycle/shared path last Monday.

    It's fair getting about.

Looks like IWRATS Raven Theory has crossed the species barrier.

Operation Soteria aims to crack down on motorbike theft and associated crime which has been a significant issue in north Edinburgh over the last few years and has now become a city-wide issue.

A SERIAL motorbike thief who posed with stolen cycles on Facebook has escaped a jail term despite facing more than 30 charges – and received a six-month driving ban.

Jordan Skachill, dubbed the “Red Baron”, was one of the leading bike thieves and joyriders among a gang of north Edinburgh youths who caused chaos on the roads.

Extra police will be pounding the beat over the summer holidays with dog handlers and the force helicopter drafted in.

More than 50 officers were on duty at the weekend, making 14 arrests and stopping 12 stolen or illegal vehicles, including four motorbikes.

Joyriding has plagued the north of the city in recent years, with summer holidays seeing a spike in bikes being stolen and ridden recklessly.

Earlier this week, we relaunched Stronger North for 2017 to tackle a range of ongoing issues affecting the communities within North Edinburgh.

We recognise that one of the most prevalent offences affecting these communities is motorcycle crime, which is an ongoing concern within the Drylaw, Pilton and Muirhouse areas.

I want to reassure the public that we recognise and understand the impact these offences have and through our ongoing Soteria Partnership involving the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, City of Edinburgh Council and the Crown Office, we are continuing to find long-term solutions in addressing the theft of motorcycles and their use in other crimes in the city.

Silly question perhaps but one to which I just don't know the answer.

Why is it so easy (apparently) to steal a motorbike/scooter? Is it simply a case of owners not nailing them down firmly enough (locks/chains/anchors), are they inherently insecure in terms of the key/ignition system?

A new motor scooter can cost less than a mid-range road bike to purchase so is it any surprise that the owners aren't willing to spend a further couple of hundred pounds on appropriate security (given so many bicycle owners also can't/won't)?

    Yes but no, and yes.

It isn't trivial to lift a car, but it is fairly trivial for two burly humans to lift a motorbike into a van, whether or not the wheels themselves are effectively immobilised. Roads and just-off-the-street areas are generally off limits for ground anchorage. At least one wheel and the frame need to be secured to something immovable.

The ignition system is necessarily exposed, although electronic immobilisers are gaining traction, against the older technique of hiding a cut-off switch somewhere on the bike. And if you can't hot wire it, you can just smash the ignition to break the steering lock. Then only if the bike is bolted down can it not be removed to somewhere more 'convenient'.

THE mum of a 14-year-old boy who died after being thrown from a stolen motorbike is urging cops to crack down on joyriders.

I'm sure the cops would appreciate the parents' help.

There was a guy came down Gilmerton Road on a sports bike tonight so fast the bike was visibly leant over on the bend. I know that means he was doing around 80mph and I'd have happily turned him in despite being bike-friendly.

Police have thanked members of the public for their support in a crackdown on motorcycle crimes and related incidents in North Edinburgh.

Speaking to the Capital’s Forth One, officers confirmed that 34 arrests have been in just 14 days as police continue a crackdown in the area.

“Current legislation provides a wide range of measures for dealing with antisocial behaviour and, in partnership with local authorities, we are reviewing existing guidance on using the laws already in place.”

Call me cynical, but I read that as: "Police Scotland hasn't got enough officers available to do anything about it."

I got footage of a loon wheelying a dirt bike through the traffic on Craiglockart Avenue a while back. The polis came round to have a look, but as the bike had no registration plate there was little they could do. I think I saw the same perp hooning around Longstone just after Christmas.

Anyone else see the group of around 8-10 dirt bikes and quad bikes absolutely steaming along Melville Drive today around mid day, overtaking everything in sight? Curiously all looked to be wearing matching t shirts over the usual uniform of hoodies and tracked. I was heading to MMW then over to the Innocent and could hear them clearly from Magdalen Glen presumably enjoying themselves around Niddrie.
