Happened right in front of me.

Chap on a drop-bar single speed who I'd been following down Morrison Street. It happened in a second, looked like his rear wheel slipped on a tram track. He had absolutely no chance of recovery.

Fortunately traffic wasn't following too closely and a large crowd of people came over to help.

Bloody nose and a nasty cut to the head, hopefully nothing else more serious. He looked white from shock. Handlebars twisted on bike.

I hung around for a few minutes but wasn't doing much as others were helping.

Hopefully the rider is ok. If you're on here (or you know who it is) and you need any kind of witness statement then please PM me

Another unfortunate reminder that Haymarket is fundamentally unsafe for bikes.

    Take care everyone.

I've got to get from Haymarket to Murryfield on Wednesday. Is there a good exit from the station?

Wfb: coming out of the station to go to Murrayfield means you've missed the worst of the tram tracks. Walking out you can join the A8 after the lights or head down Haymarket Yards avoiding the bad angle of crossing at the top.

Only one exit now I think. Is beyond the jug handle. Watch out for the trams. You could actually follow the line of the tracks but probably more straightforward to take road to roseburn junction, about one mile. You get to a Tesco direct take left and cycle round the road to the stadium entrance, you will see the big tram station at murrayfield, Odessa steps?

If you come out of the new doors at Haymarket, turn left and walk about 50m along Haymarket Terrace (towards Murrayfield) you will completely avoid the tram tracks, as they veer down Haymarket Yards. Just jump on the bike after that - its bus lane all the way along to Roseburn Street (on your left) and then a few hundred metres of fairly quiet road. Should only take a few minutes.

Or along the path to Russell rd, and then path through to murrayfield? Can do a cycl streets map for you if you want.

Google has both A8 and Haymarket Yards routes.

I'm not overly worried about the tram tracks, I've cycled past them before. Does the tram follow the A8?

Found the Tesco on Google maps.

It's only a mile. I've got just enough time to see the boys off to school then sprint down to the station. Having recently got a smart phone I shouldn't get lost…

Will make sense when you get there. The tram tracks leave the a8 just beyond Haymarket station and veer down Haymarket yards. You can also do this at this juncture but the cycle lane is infringed by the tram track to a whopping degree. You can then jook about through various car parking spaces and come up and over a cycle path/ hairpin chicane thingy and down to Russell road.

However if you just come out of Haymarket turn left, cycle the a8 to e Tesco metro just before the roseburn bar and follow the road round to murrayfield will be straightforward and tram free.

Thanks, A8 it is then. I get lunch at Murryfield. Hope it's nice.

@WFB "I'm not overly worried about the tram tracks, I've cycled past them before."

    Please read this.

Being the victim of a bike crash can be awful even if there are no serious injuries (e.g. Stickman's description above) and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
